FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was camped out on the corner of Bulldog Lane and Cedar Avenue this morning raising awareness and money for an organization that is near and dear to its heart.
"We have been partnering with Valley Children's Hospital for a long time with our Big Heroes, Little Heroes program, so it is awesome to be able to do this as well and help raise money throughout the community for them," said SAAC Secretary and Fresno State volleyball player Maggie Eppright.
Several teams joined Eppright and the volleyball in the cause on Tuesday morning, including football, swimming and diving, lacrosse, soccer and track and field.
"It was fun to get everyone involved today," said Danielle Powers, SAAC President and senior swimmer. "It was great to see all of the different teams and how they got into it for such a great cause."
The student-athletes sold 300 Kids Day papers. In addition to raising $561.70 for the Valley Children's Hospital fundraiser, Powers and Eppright have also combined for over 20 hours of community service in the past week alone.
"It is important because we represent the pride of the Valley, that is why the V is on my swim cap and the back of Maggie's uniform, " said Powers on the importance of community service, "We can't represent the Valley if we do not know who is apart of the Valley, giving back in community gives us the opportunity to get out there and see who is supporting us."
As executive officers in SAAC, Powers and Eppright lead through their actions, putting in time in the last seven days at multiple elementary schools for Read Across America, Boys and Girls Club, as well as speaking at Fresno State Campus Outreach middle school tours on the importance of academics in athletics.
"I didn't realize the importance of community service until I came to Fresno State," said Eppright. "Once I got here and realized how much community support we get as an athletic department, it is only right that we give back."
With SAAC leadership, Fresno State student-athletes have completed over 3,000 total hours of service in the community this school year. Through Valley traditions such as Kids Day, our Bulldogs look to continue instilling the value of service.
