FRESNO, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore Haile Watson will join the Fresno State volleyball team for the 2016-17 academic year, as announced by head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on Wednesday.
A transfer from Eastern Washington University, Watson graduated from Lake City High School in Couer d'Alene, Idaho where she earned two varsity letters and 2013 second-team All-State honors in volleyball and additionally competed for track and basketball.
"We recruited Haile out of high school but at the time she decided to stay close to home," Netherby-Sewell said. "We're excited she's finally decided to become a Bulldog. Haile is a talented athlete, she's agile and jumps well. We have a lot of youth in the middle, so it'll be nice to have one more talented player who can raise the level of competition. We're a pretty physical team now across the board."
After redshirting her first season in Cheney, the 6-2 middle blocker played in seven matches during the 2015 campaign and made two starts while appearing in 14 sets. She finished the year with 12 kills and five blocks, including a season-high six kills on eight swings (.625) and three blocks against Idaho on Nov. 7.
Watson notched one kill and one block during her first collegiate game start versus then-ranked No. 16 Hawai'i on Sept. 12 and additionally added four kills and one block against Corban (Sept. 17). She helped the Eagles to a fourth-place 2015 Big Sky finish (14-14, 9-7 Big Sky) with playing time against Idaho State during the conference tournament on Nov. 19.
