DAVIS, Calif. - Kayla Hopkins highlighted the Woody Wilson Classic for the Fresno State track and field team as she recorded the seventh-best discus throw in school history at 50.59 meters (166'-00") as well as a 13.37m (43'-10.50") toss in the shot put on Saturday, both distances resulted in first place finishes for the sophomore. Hopkins also set a personal record in the hammer on Friday (48.09m/157'-09"), which was the second-best collegiate toss in the event.
The other huge PR on Saturday belonged to pole vaulter Shane Atkinson, who smashed an old mark of 4.90m by clearing 5.20m (17'-00.75"). The sophomore took first place in the event. Pending results from the weekend, he is one of 47 individuals in the NCAA to clear 17 feet.
Although short of her personal best, Vanja Spaic recorded a first place javelin throw of 43.78m (143'-08") at the Classic. Currently, the true freshman's top hurl is 44.53m, which is the No. 10 mark in school history.
On Friday, the Woody Wilson Classic featured only the hammer event. And in addition to Hopkins setting a PR, teammate Peter Breceda on the men's side broke the 50-meter plateau for the first time with a personal-best 50.17m (164'-07") throw.
The Woody Wilson Classic did not feature Bulldogs from the sprints or jumps team as they had the weekend off. The distance team competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 14-15.
