RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team placed third at the Mountain West Women's Golf Championship at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. The 54-hole tournament concluded Wednesday with the Bulldogs carding an all-time event low 897; the finish matched the Bulldogs' best at the conference tournament in the program's four years in the league.
"The ladies went toe-to-toe with two of the best teams in the country and really showed the conference how much talent we have at Fresno State," said head coach Emily Milberger-Loftin. "I am very proud of this team and the grit and determination they played with."
The 'Dogs finished third behind tournament champion No. 17 UNLV and No. 22 San Diego State. Fresno State was in third place and two shots back from the lead after round one, rose to second after Tuesday's round, and dropped back to third at the conclusion of the event.
Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Kristin Simonsen led the Bulldogs, each with top 10 finishes.
"It was great to see both Gudrun and Kristin clinch top 10 finishes," said Milberger-Loftin. "They led us through all three rounds this week and they should be proud of themselves for that."
Bjorgvinsdottir tied for seventh at 7-over-par (223). On Wednesday, she matched her second round score of 4-over-par 76 - she opened with a 1-under-par 71. The junior can now claim two top 10's for her career at the MW Championship as she was the individual champion as a freshman in 2014.
Simonsen tied for 10th at 8-over-par (224). Alike Bjorgvinsdottir, she played within the top 10 through all three rounds. Simonsen opened the event with a 73, shot a second round 77 and closed with a 74 on the par-72 course.
Hannah Sodersten finished just outside the top 10 at T-13th in her final MW Championship. The senior fired her lowest score of the week of 2-over-par 74 during Wednesday's final round. She was 10-over-par (226) for the tournament.
In addition to Bjorgvindottir, Simonsen and Sodersten, Fresno State used the 3-over-par 75 carded by Mimi Ho for its fourth team score on Wednesday in part of the 5-count-4 scoring format. Ho placed tied for 17th. Also in play, Yifie Wang finished tied for 21st after a final round 7-over-par 79.
"I'm so proud of all the hard work that this team has put in this season," Milberger-Loftin added. "The future is looking bright."
Fresno State will await its fate for postseason play with the NCAA selection show on Monday, April 25.
