5/11/2016 2:01:53 PM
OPENING FACEOFF
Fresh off capturing the program's second America East Tournament title, the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team will face Quinnipiac (11-3) in an NCAA play-in game on Wednesday afternoon. Opening faceoff from QU Lacrosse Turf Complex is set for 4 p.m. in a contest that will be broadcasted live on ESPNU. The series between the Hawks and Bobcats has been a heated one over the years, but the stakes have never been higher as the winner plays at Maryland, the overall No. 1 seed of the NCAA Tournament, on Sunday.
ÂÂ
ABOUT THE SERIES
Wednesday will mark the 18th time Hartford and Quinnipiac meet since 1999. The Hawks hold a 10-7 advantage in the series, which has featured a slew of close contests in recent years. Just three goals or less have separated the two teams in each of the last nine meetings, with six of those contests being single-goal decisions. The last two meetings have needed overtime to reach an outcome, with each team winning on the other's home field. In March, the Bobcats won in West Hartford on an unassisted goal from Connor Meth (11-10), while the year before, it was Griffin Feiner who delivered the dagger in extra time to give the Hawks the 10-9 victory in Hamden. Quinnipiac's win this season snapped a string of six-straight Hartford victories.
ÂÂ
QUINNIPIAC SCOUT
Quinnipiac is making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bobcats enter the NCAA Tournament riding an eight-game winning streak, having gone 6-0 during the MAAC regular-season before defeating Canisius (13-7) and Marist (13-9) in the conference tournament. Jack Brust, a junior goalie, tallied 31 saves and conceded just 16 goals in two games during the MAAC Tournament to earn the league's Most Outstanding Player honor. He ranks third nationally in save percentage with a .580 mark. Ryan Keenan and Brian Feldman have paced the Bobcats' offense, which averages 10.36 goals per game. Keenan, a senior attackman, has 46 points behind 31 goals and 15 assists while linemate Feldman, a sophomore, adds 33 goals and five assists for 38 points.
ÂÂ
LAST TIME THEY MET
Despite leading for most of the game, including a 9-8 edge with just over five minutes left to play, Hartford fell to Quinnipiac in overtime by an 11-10 count at Al-Marzook Field in March. Four first-half goals from Dylan Jinks put the Hawks up by four (7-3) at the break. But the Bobcats clawed their way back, and took a 10-9 lead with 2:47 left to play in regulation. Seven seconds later, sophomore Dylan Protesto tied up the game with a goal out of the ensuing faceoff, but in overtime, Quinnipiac's Connor Meth bounced-in the game-winning shot with 1:37 into the extra session to propel his team to the victory.
ÂÂ
LAST TIME OUT
The Hawks held on for a 17-16 victory over third-seeded Vermont in the America East's title game on Saturday. A season-best four players (Alec Brown, Justin Huggins, Dylan Jinks and Trevor O'Brien) collected hat tricks while Jaedon Henderson handed out five assists as the Hawks matched a season-high scoring output in the win. Hartford fell behind, 8-4, early in the second quarter, but used a 6-0 run to pull ahead by two at the half. That lead was extended to four goals twice in the second half. Also standing out was goalie Ryan Vanderford, who registered a season-high 15 saves between the pipes, including a plethora of game-changing stops.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
HOW WE GOT HERE
Hartford shocked the lacrosse community this past weekend, becoming the first No. 4 seed to win the America East Championship in conference history. First knocking off top-seeded UAlbany - the fourth-ranked team in the nation - in overtime on its home field (11-10), the Hawks grinded out a 17-16 win over third-seeded Vermont for the conference crown less than two days later. Sophomore Dylan Protesto - the tournament's Most Outstanding Player - won 72.7 percent of his faceoffs over the weekend while sophomore Justin Huggins combined for eight goals in the two wins, including the game-winner in overtime against the Great Danes.
ÂÂ
NEXT ON TAP
Wednesday's winner will move on to face Maryland, the top seed in the field, in the Round of 16 on Sunday, May 15. That contest, which will be aired live on ESPNU, is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start time.
ÂÂ
COMEBACK KIDS...
The Hawks earned their spot to the America East Championship in dramatic fashion against UAlbany last Thursday. Trailing by two with five minutes left to play, Hartford came back to tie up the game in the final minute before winning the contest in overtime. The comeback was the first of its kind for the Hawks this season, as they were previously 0-5 when trailing with five minutes left on the clock. In addition, it marked the first time in six games this season that the squad was able to prevail when facing a deficit at the end of the three quarters.
ÂÂ
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Fresh off earning the program's second league title, the Hawks are ranked 19th in the Cascade/Maverik Media Poll, managed by Inside Lacrosse. In addition, Hartford is receiving votes in the final release of the USILA Coaches' Poll. The national ranking in the media poll is the first for the program since 2011, when the Hawks rounded-out the top-20 list after winning the program's first-ever America East title. The squad was also listed in the USILA Poll that week, receiving 24 votes to rank 19th.
ÂÂ
QUADRUPLE THE HAT TRICKS
For the first time this season, Hartford had four players register a hat trick in Saturday's victory over Vermont in the America East Championship's title game. Alec Brown, Justin Huggins, Dylan Jinks and Jaedon Henderson each recorded a team-best three goals to pace the offense in the win. It had been over a year since four Hawks recorded three-or-more goals in the same game, as Kevin O'Shea (5), Griffin Feiner (3), Huggins (3) and Matt Carroll (3) accomplished the feat in a 15-8 win over UMass (April 10, 2015).
ÂÂ
THE ACCOLADES CONTINUE TO ROLL IN
Dylan Protesto, who was named America East All-Conference First Team last week, continues to collect the postseason hardware. Winning 72.7 percent of his faceoffs during the America East Championship while tacking on a key goal in the Vermont win Saturday, he earned Most Outstanding Player honors. Most recently, the sophomore was honored by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA), as he was placed on the All-New England Second Team on Tuesday.
ÂÂ
MAKING HISTORY
Hartford's stunning upset over fourth-ranked UAlbany in last Thursday's semifinal game was one for the books. It is arguably the biggest win in program history, as it marked the Hawks' first against an opponent ranked in the nation's top-five. Prior to shocking the Great Danes, Hartford knocked off sixth-ranked UMBC in West Hartford, Conn., back in 2009.
ÂÂ
GIVE ME DOUBLE DIGITS
The Hawks' 11 wins this season are the most for Hartford since 2011, when the squad finished 11-6 overall. That year, the Hawks made history with the program's first America East Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Since joining the Division I ranks 32 years ago, the Hawks have put up double-digit win totals four times, including a program-best 14 in 2000 (14-2 overall record).
ÂÂ
HE IS NUMBER ONE
To say that sophomore Dylan Protesto has dominated at the faceoff X this season is an understatement. He enters Wednesday's NCAA Tournamnet game as the nation's top faceoff specialist, sporting a .712 win percentage. In addition, his 8.24 ground ball average lands him fourth in the country, and first in the America East.
ÂÂ
...AND SO ARE THEY
As a team, Hartford enters the NCAA Tournament as the statistical leader in faceoffs among all of NCAA Division I men's lacrosse. As a squad, the Hawks currently own a .693 win percentage at the X, a mark that has been fueled by sophomore Dylan Protesto. In addition to Protesto's .712 win rate - a mark that is tops in the nation - classmate Spencer Andrews has also fared well inside of the circle this season, as he has won 57.7 percent of his 52 faceoff attempts.
ÂÂ
SETTING LOFTY GOALS
Saturday's championship game against Vermont was a high-scoring affair. In fact, the Hawks matched a season-best offensive output in the victory by outslugging the Catamounts, 17-16. The 32 combined goals marked the highest-scoring title game in America East history. Earlier this season, Hartford scored 17 times in a win over Binghamton (Apr. 2), marking the most goals in a single game since 2014, when it netted 19 in a win at Richmond.
ÂÂ
GROUND BALLIN'
One of the many standouts in Thursday's thrilling, overtime upset of fourth-ranked UAlbany in the America East semifinals was sophomore Dylan Protesto. In addition to his clutch, 20-of-24 performance at the X, the All-Conference First Team pick came away with a career-high 14 ground balls. That figure marks the fifth-most loose balls collected in a single game this season among all NCAA Division I players.
ÂÂ
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Attackman Dylan Jinks was named the America East's Rookie of the Year last week prior to the conference tournament. His selection marks the first time since 2009 that a Hartford player has earned one of the America East's major awards. Scott Bement, a goalie, took home Rookie of the Year honors that season. Jinks, who also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team, was joined by sophomore midfielder Dylan Jinks (First Team) and senior defender Chris Duffy (Second Team) on All-Conference squads.
ÂÂ
FIVE DIMES
Despite not reaching the back of the net, junior Jaedon Henderson played a key role in Hartford's defeat of Vermont in Saturday's title game. He assisted on five of the Hartford's 17 goals to match the most dimes handed out in a game this season by a Hawk. The junior, who previously accomplished the feat in this season's win at Marist (March 15), also tied a career-high in points in the process. Dylan Jinks is the only other Hawk to register five assists in a game this year, doing so in the win over Binghamton (April 2).
ÂÂ
SMARTIES
A conference-best five Hawks landed America East All-Academic Team honors last week. Seniors Chris Duffy, Kevin Sanna and Jake Vogl became repeat honorees on the 10-member team, while sophomores Will Dulin and Brendan Gates earned the accolade for the first time in their careers.
ÂÂ
ON THE ATTACK
Junior Jaedon Henderson, sophomore Justin Huggins and freshman Dylan Jinks have made up the starting attack for the Hawks in the last 10 games. During that stretch, Hartford has put up 93 goals, an average of 11.00 goals per game, while posting a 7-3 record. The trio have been huge contributing factors to the Hawks' offensive outburst as they have combined for 49 of the squad's 71 goals, and nearly half (87) of the team's 181 points.
ÂÂ
PROTESTING
Sophomore Dylan Protesto has been impressive inside of the faceoff circle. His 140 ground balls this year are the second-most collected by a Hartford player in a single season in program history. In addition, Protesto's 255 wins at the X are the most in a single season at Hartford, while his 398 career victories inside of the faceoff circle are good for second in the books.
ÂÂ
DON'T "JINKS" HIM
It is obvious that attackman Dylan Jinks has made noise at the conference ranks, as he is currently in the top-10 of the America East in points per game and assists per game. More impressively, Jinks' 3.41 points per game are the 45th-most in all of NCAA Division I men's lacrosse, and the fifth-most among the nation's rookies.
ÂÂ
GOT WINS? VANDERFORD DOES...
Goalie Ryan Vanderford is making significant strides in Hartford's record books in a plethora of categories. Saturday's championship win against Vermont was his 11th this season, which ties the program's single-season record (Chris LaMonica also had 11 wins in 1997). On his career, Vanderford enters Wednesday's game as the third-winningest goalie in program history, accumulating 18 wins in just 32 appearances.
ÂÂ
VANDY IS CLIMBING THE RANKINGS
Ryan Vanderford is also moving up the rankings in Hartford's record book in saves. His 331 rejections between the pipes currently stand as the ninth-most in program history:
ÂÂ
FINISHING ON TOP
An early lead in the game usually results in a win for Hartford this season. When leading at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks are 8-1, and in the nine games that the squad is ahead at the half, they have won eight times. Furthermore, when leading after three quarters, Hartford is almost guaranteed to hold on for the win, as it is 10-1.
ÂÂ
A HELPING HAND
Junior Jaedon Henderson has always been a key playmaker as a member of the Hawks' attacking line, and this season has been no exception. Recording an assist in all but one game this season, he leads the team in the category with 31, a career-high. Moreover, Henderson's 1.82 helpers per game rank fourth in the America East and 22nd in the nation. The Ithaca, N.Y., native, who is six points shy of 100 on his career, ranks ninth in program history with 54 career assists.
ÂÂ
MAD HATTERS
Through 17 games this season, seven different Hawks have accounted for 24 hat tricks. Leading the way with six hat tricks are sophomores Griffin Feiner and Justin Huggins, while rookie Dylan Jinks adds five. Rounding out Hartford's three-plus-goal outings is junior Alec Brown (4), sophomore Will Dulin (1) and junior Jaedon Henderson (1) and sophomore Trevor O'Brien (1).
ÂÂ
THE FEINER THINGS IN LIFE
Since arriving at Hartford for the 2015 season, Griffin Feiner has proven himself to be a scoring threat for the Hawks. In 32 career games, he has totaled 54 goals - an average of 1.7 per game - while accumulating 69 career points. This season, the attacking midfielder has already set a career high with 42 points, with his 32 goals leading the way for the offense.
ÂÂ
HIGH FIVE
Five goals has been a common trend for the Hawks this season, as four different players have reached the season-best total in five different games. Alec Brown, Griffin Feiner, Justin Huggins and Dylan Jinks have each put together five-goal games, with Huggins accomplishing the feat for the second time this season in Thursday's semifinal upset over fourth-ranked UAlbany.
ÂÂ
APPROACHING 100
Eclipsing the 50-point mark in his first game as a junior at Boston University, Jaedon Henderson is rapidly approaching the 100-point milestone on his career. An attackman, Henderson enters Wednesday's opening-round tilt with 94 career points, needing six more to reach the century mark. Recording at least one point in all but one game this season, Henderson is currently ranked second on the squad in scoring with a career-high 45 points behind 14 goals and 31 assists.
