WACO, Texas - The Fresno State equestrian team will be represented by Taylor Brown at the 2016 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Collegiate Reining Championship, as announced by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. The "ultimate catch ride" will get underway on Thursday, June 30 at 6 a.m. PT.
The event is held during the NRHA Derby at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City and features Brown among three additional NCEA first-team All-American recipients - Texas A&M's Hannah Jechow, Oklahoma State's Ebba Lange and TCU's Chantz Stewart. Georgia's Lauren Garmon is the first alternate.
"Taylor had a great year in reining and being invited to this event among these other great riders is an honor," head coach Eric Hubbard said. "We look forward to Taylor's success in Oklahoma."
The three-time All-American was one of five Bulldogs to appear in every competition during the 2015-16 campaign, and also earned an invitation to the AQHA Horsemanship Challenge back in November. Brown logged 11 victories over the course of 14 matchups, was outscored just twice and tied her respective opponent once.
Brown's success in the saddle landed her on the NCEA All-American first-team and United Equestrian Conference first-team, in addition to being named the UEC 2016 Reining Rider of the Year. She will return as a senior for the 2016-17 academic year.
The 12-person field also includes four collegiate riders selected by the NRHA and the top-four individual reiners from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championship. Additional riders from NCEA-sponsoring institutions may be added to the competition from the NRHA's four selections.
The NRHA Derby runs for one week each summer in Oklahoma City and showcases the world's best reining horses in the four to six year age range. Thousands of spectators, exhibitors, and horses attend the event each year. The Derby is one of two major events presented by the NRHA each year in Oklahoma City.
