‘Dogs open season in Berkeley

Fresno State will open the spring at the Cal Winter Invitational on Friday.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team will open its 2017 spring season this weekend at the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Matches will be held at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts beginning on Friday and will run through Saturday.
The Bulldogs have been opening their spring season at the Cal tournament since 2010-11 season and will again see common opponents in Cal Poly, Saint Mary's and Cal, which is ranked No. 6 to open the season. Fresno State will open doubles competition against Cal and singles play against Saint Mary's.
Ranked singles players in competition are No. 17 Karla Popovic and No. 49 Maegan Manasse of Cal. There will be five nationally-ranked doubles teams in the field including the Cal pairs of Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger (No. 38), Denise Starr and Maria Smith (No. 40), Saint Mary's pairs of Parminder Kaur and Emma Critser (No. 51), and Jana McCord and Jacqueline Pelletier (No. 60). Fresno State's No. 54-ranked team of Georgia Lawson and Katerina Stloukalova will also be in the field.
Two years ago, the Bulldogs left the tournament with 12 wins in three days, but last year, teams were only able to play the first day after rain washed out day two and three.
