’Dogs grind out 79-73 win over George Mason

Fresno State junior guard Deshon Taylor scored 23 points with three assists as the Bulldogs fended off a resilient George Mason squad to capture third-place in the 2017 Cancun Challenge Riviera Division.
CANCUN, Mexico --- The Fresno State men's basketball team earned a 79-73 victory over the George Mason Patriots on Wednesday evening in the third-place game of the Riviera Division of the 2017 Cancun Challenge.
Fresno State (3-2) led by as many as 17 points and withstood George Mason (3-3) surging back in the second half to within three before the Bulldogs shut the door on the comeback bid.
Fresno State junior guard Deshon Taylor scored a team-high 23 points with three assists to earn a spot on the 2017 Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team.
Bulldogs' senior guard Ray Bowles, Jr., stepped up with a season-high 21 points – six shy of his career-high – and sophomore forward Bryson Williams recorded his second straight double-double (15 points and 10 rebounds).
How it happened: Fresno State used a 12-0 run early the first half and later built up 17-point advantage on the Patriots. The Bulldogs led 43-29 at halftime.
Fresno State junior guard Deshon Taylor scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half, while making all five of his first-half field goal attempts, including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the 3-point arc before the break.
George Mason climbed its way back into the game with a 30-16 run that closed the Bulldogs' lead to 57-54 nearly midway through the second half, but the Patriots got no closer down the stretch.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the field and won the battle in the paint 40-30.
