Free dental care for Fresno's youth will be available in the South Gym starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday
FRESNO, Calif. - For its 11th year, Fresno State Athletics is teaming up with TeamSmile and the Fresno-Madera Dental Society to provide complimentary dental and preventative care to children between the ages of 5 and 18.Â
The organization will be at the South Gym on the Fresno State campus for its annual event on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.Â
"The reason we do this project every year, low-income children are twice as likely to suffer from tooth decay, and millions of school hours are lost per year due to dental pain," said Dr. Xavier J Gutierrez. "The U.S. Surgeon General's report stated that dental decay is the most common chronic disease in childhood, this is our way of giving back and helping the children of our community."
TeamSmile is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to organize lasting partnerships between local dentists, sports teams and dental organizations. The goal of these partnerships is to provide children in local communities with life-changing dental care and instruction who might not be exposed to it otherwise. The end result is to make these children more aware of the importance of dental care and proper dental hygiene.Â
Over one hundred dental volunteers will share their time and their materials to help children in need and give them an entire dental experience free of charge. Each child who participates will learn the importance of good oral care, have its teeth clean and varnished, receive an oral health assessment by a dentist and receive any dental treatment if needed. Complimentary follow up appointments may be scheduled if necessary.Â
Children will get the chance to meet several Fresno State athletes who will be on site signing autographs and spending time with the kids. Fresno State's mascot, Timeout, will also be making an appearance at the event.Â
Fresno State Athletics prides itself in being the only NCAA program to partner with TeamSmile for its cause, an event associated with working alongside professional sports teams such as the Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
To sign up for the free event, visit http://www.teamsmile.wildapricot.org/event-2685815  and fill out the registration form that is available on the website, print it out and bring it to the event. Parental attendance is not required for the event but all forms must be completed entirely in order for a child to participate.Â
