Fresno State uses 40-point first half to secure win at Air Force.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Behind 38 points from Candice White (20) and Maddi Utti (18), and a hot shooting first half from the field, Fresno State defeated Air Force 64-58 on Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After allowing the opening basket, White triggered a 17-2 run with a 3-pointer. The junior accounted for eight points while Utti had four. Fresno State held a 19-9 advantage after one.
Allowing a layup-and-one to open the second, Fresno State shot out to 12-1 run started by a pair of 3's from Jordanna Porter while the Bulldogs' defense held Air Force more than six minutes without a basket. Despite a jumper from Sierra Rains, the 'Dogs answered back with Breanne Knishka's second 3 of the game. A miss at the other end and White found Utti on a run out in transition for an easy layup to force the Falcons to call a timeout. Fresno State ended the half converting on its last five shot attempts as the team took a 40-18 lead into the break after holding the Falcons to 17.2 percent from floor (5-of-28).
After a layup from Utti extended the lead to 24 to start the third quarter, six Bulldog turnovers aided to a 14-0 run for the Falcons with nine straight points coming from leading scorer Kaelin Immel. Despite being outscored by 10 in the quarter, the Bulldogs held a 12-point advantage with 10 minutes to play.
Reeling after the third, the 'Dogs answered with an 8-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter with six points coming from White to push their lead back to 20. The Falcons though would not go quietly, as Immel and Courtney Porter combined for 16 of 19 points during a 19-4 run to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 60-55 with 52 seconds remaining on the clock. Fresno State iced the game at the charity stripe with Aly Gamez and White each converting a pair.
