Kamalani Dung earned her third victory of the weekend while Lindsey Willmon hit two home runs and notched a team-high five RBIs
Â
Fresno State sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung earned her third win of the weekend, while senior Lindsey Willmon paced the 'Dogs with two home runs and five RBIs. Freshman Miranda Rohleder was a double short of hitting for the cycle after hitting 5-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBIs.
Â
The Bulldogs' 20 hits in the game were one short of the program record, set in Fresno State's 1998 National Championship season.
Â
"We were relentless at the plate," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "We made adjustments and found ways to keep the pressure on our opponent. I'm eager to match up with some quality programs next weekend in Mexico. Our goals are to always come out and compete, pitch-by-pitch, and to attack early and often."
Â
The Bulldog offense got started early in the top of the first with a combination of a 3-run home run by junior Katie Castellon, a solo home run by Rohleder, five singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly to give Fresno State an 8-0 lead.
Â
The Cardinal responded in the bottom of the first with a 3-run home run by Kylie Sorenson, only to be answered by the Bulldogs in the top of the second with a 2-run home run by junior Savannah McHellon, giving the 'Dogs a 10-3 lead.
Â
Stanford left a runner stranded in the bottom of the second and the Bulldog bats returned to the game, ready to do more damage. Sophomore Morgan Howe hit an RBI single, Willmon slammed a 3-run home run, and freshman Schuylar Broussard added a 2-RBI single, which increased the Bulldog lead to 16-3.
Â
The Cardinal were then able to load the bases in the bottom of the third, but couldn't find home plate. Willmon would then return in the top of the fourth to hit a 2-run home run following a leadoff triple by Rohleder.
Â
Fresno State freshman pitcher Samantha Mejia then entered the game in the fourth, replacing Dung (3.0 IP, 1 K, 3 ER, 3 H, 5 BB). Stanford was able to strike, scoring two runs on three singles and two hit batters with no outs before McHellon took the mound for the 'Dogs. The Cardinal put three more runs on the board and closed in on Fresno State's lead, making it 18-8.
Â
However, in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 24-8 thanks to a pinch-hit 3-run home run by junior Chase LeeHong, a 2-RBI single by Rohleder and Castellon scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
Stanford loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't score. McHellon would complete the game with two innings pitched, one strikeout and four hits allowed.
Â
What's next?
The Bulldogs travel to the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday to participate in the four-day, five-team tournament in Mexico. Fresno State will then head back to Fresno for its home-opener against Cal Poly on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. PT.
