Fresno State equestrian has defeated a No.1-ranked opponent for the second time this season
FRESNO, Calif. – For the second time this season the No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team has defeated the No. 1-ranked team in the country as the Bulldogs defeated Baylor by raw score on Friday 1458.0-1456.5 at the Fresno State Animal Science Pavilion. Earlier this season, the 'Dogs took down then-No. 1 Auburn 11-5.
Â
"Today was very exciting," Fresno State head coach Eric Hubbard said. "It speaks to the talent of this team. We had a rough road trip, and to come back and win today is great."
Â
This is just the third Fresno State win in 12 meetings between the Bulldogs and Bears and is the first 10-10 draw. The last time the 'Dogs won in the series was Feb. 22, 2014. In the fall, Baylor outscored Fresno State 9-5 in Texas.
Â
Senior western rider Taylor Brown and junior Taylor Dixon led the Bulldogs with wins in horsemanship and reining, while sophomore hunt seat rider Alexandra Dirickson took points in equitation on the flat and equitation over fences.
Â
The morning began with Baylor outscoring Fresno State in equitation over fences 3-2, with Dirickson and freshman Maddy Keck recording points for the Bulldogs.
Â
The 'Dogs then tied the meet in reining, taking a 3-2 advantage over the Bears. Brown, Dixon and freshman Paige Barton put the three points on the board for Fresno State.
Â
The Bulldogs took the lead in horsemanship, owning a 4-1 advantage over Baylor, going into equitation on the flat. Brown, Dixon, senior Madison Robinson and junior Rachel Williams scored for the Bulldogs and giving them a 9-6 lead.
Â
Baylor came just short of a comeback, outscoring the Bulldogs 4-1 in the event, but Fresno State got just enough points from Dirickson in the victory.
Â
Brown earned an MOP for her performance in horsemanship, while Keck earned the honor for the first time in her career in equitation over fences.
Â
Fresno State returns to action tomorrow against No. 5 SMU at Fresno State.
