Fresno State Softball defeated UC Davis, 3-0, and Idaho State, 11-6, on Saturday at the Bulldog Classic
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team picked up two wins on Saturday at the Bulldog Classic as the 'Dogs defeated UC Davis, 3-0, and Idaho State, 11-6, at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs (9-5) were led by sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung, who retired the first 14 batters of the game against the Aggies and allowed only two base runners en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
"[Kamalani] was locked in all day," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "She was hitting her spots and had great composure throughout the game. She led us on the mound today and I'm proud of her success in staying in the moment."
Fresno State's game against Idaho State (2-6) was highlighted by a grand slam from freshman Maddi Hackbarth, her second home run of the year and the first Bulldog grand slam since Dominique Jackson hit one on April 30, 2016, against San Jose State. It was only the 10th Fresno State grand slam at home since 1991.
"Today we found ways to pull off two wins," Garza said. "Our defense was challenged all night and we have many things we still need to get better at before conference."
The Bulldogs return to action in the Bulldog Classic on Sunday as they face Cal Poly at 11:30 a.m. PT and UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. Idaho State and No. 12 Minnesota are scheduled to play at 9 a.m.
How it happened against UC Davis
Fresno State sophomore ace Kamalani Dung (7-2) entered the circle for the ninth time in 14 games on Saturday and came just short of a perfect game. She retired the first 14 batters before UC Davis hit a bunt single with two outs left in the top of the fifth inning.
Dung, who notched her fourth shutout of the season, gave up only two hits while striking out four and lowering her ERA to 1.64. Batters are hitting .181 against her this season.
The Bulldogs scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Malia Rivers led the game off with a single, followed by a bunt single by freshman Miranda Rohleder. They each advanced when sophomore Vanessa Hernandez flied out and the bases were loaded when senior Lindsey Willmon took a free pass.
Senior Kierra Willis knocked home Rivers with an infield groundout and sophomore Morgan Howe hit in Willmon and Rohleder with a two-out single.
The Aggies hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get any other runners on base. Andrea Reynolds pitched a complete game for UC Davis and fell to 1-3 on the year.
How it happened against Idaho State
In a game marred by errors, the Bulldogs came out ahead to complete their day-three sweep at the Bulldog Classic. The teams combined for 17 errors during the game and only four of the combined 17 runs were earned.
Idaho State set a new mark in the Big Sky Conference for the most errors in a game (9) and Fresno State tied its highest error total (8) in 31 years (5/16/1986 – vs. Long Beach State).
The Bengals began the game with a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth before the Bulldogs would cross the plate with five runs of their own. Four of those runs came off a grand slam by Maddi Hackbarth.
The next two innings would allow Fresno State to score three in each and take a 11-6 final lead. Howe went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored and Willmon went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
Junior Savannah McHellon began the game in the circle for the Bulldogs (3.0 IP, 6 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) before freshman Samantha Mejia came into the game for the final four innings and picked up her first career win. Mejia allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three.
