With her third basket of the night, junior Bego Faz Davalos reached the 1,000-point mark for her career to become the eighth player in the Mountain West this season to reach the milestone, and only one of three juniors to do so.
FRESNO, Calif. – On a night that honored the Fresno State senior class, and ended a with junior Bego Faz Davalos being honored for joining the Bulldogs 1,000-point club, the 'Dogs were unable to go 3-for-3 on the night as Boise State played spoiler, defeating the 'Dogs 66-48 on Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.
With 4:39 on the clock in the third quarter, Faz Davalos dropped in a jumper to score her 1,000th career point. She became the 23rd Bulldog in program history reach the career milestone. Also in the game, senior Emilie Volk finished one point shy of a double-double as she collected 10 rebounds and nine points. Not be outdone, fellow senior Anais Kirvan posted career highs with six rebounds and four blocks.
The Bulldogs were led on the night by sophomore Candice White's 16 points while Faz Davalos finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. The duo was outdone though by Brooke Pahukoa (21) and Marta Hermida (12) who combined 33 points.
How It Happened: With Fresno State trailing 13-12 with 1:14 remaining in the first quarter, a layup by Riley Lupfer to end the period began a 16-0 Bronco run. That stretch aided in Boise State outscoring the Bulldogs 29-9 in the second quarter. BSU knocked down 12 of its final 13 shots of the half, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Yaiza Rodriguez to give the visitors a 44-21 lead at the half.
Despite picking up two very early fouls that sent Pahukoa to the bench for the majority of the first quarter, the senior was the difference in the second quarter during the Broncos' run as she connected on 6-of-7 attempts for 14 of her 21 points.
Trailing 54-31 with 3:40 on the clock in the third, Fresno State began a 13-0 run, including seven from White, which carried into the fourth quarter and helped the home team pull within 10. Despite White's 3 which cut the deficit to 10, the Broncos struck back with a pair of buckets from Pahukoa and a 3-pointer from Rodriguez that put the game out of reach with less than five minutes to play.
What It Means: Heading its final game of the season, Fresno State knows that it will be either the seventh or eighth seed in next week's Mountain West Tournament. A win at UNLV on March 3 will give the Bulldogs the No. 7 seed, but a loss could potentially move the 'Dogs into the No. 8 seed depending on other results throughout the league.
Team Notes:
Head Coach Jaime White on tonight's game…
"There is not much to say. We just let that second quarter get away from us and it was the predictor of the game. We didn't get a lot of defensive stops in that quarter and it kind of set the pace for the rest of the game. We had a little run in the third quarter, I think we closed that quarter within 10 points. We are proud of Bego for getting her 1,000 points. We are proud of our seniors and all they have done for our program."
Head Coach Jaime White on what is next…
"We go back to work. We have to try to beat UNLV. We have to go to their place, but it is just like any other game. It is really important to take one game at a time during this part of the year. We can't get too overly anxious about the whole picture. At this point in the game, you have to keep winning. Obviously we have to go back to the drawing board and tune some things up to be ready to go on Friday."
Head Coach Jaime White on what she is teaching her younger players…
"The run at this time of the year is very important. We would love to have some kids step up and help us off the bench. We are having young kids help us every night because we are a young team and there is no choice there. We have sophomores and freshmen coming in and doing the best that they can, but the experience overcomes that youth sometimes. At the end of the day, we have got to constantly stay tight and stay focused on our defense and not let that slip."
Head Coach Jaime White on Emilie Volk…
"Emilie has been a huge part of the Bulldogs for her career. We love her and I know her teammates love her. I have never coached a kid who has endured and been patient with us, and I am so proud of her this year. Her and all of our other seniors have had a great ride, and as a coach, I have to be very proud of that."
Bego Faz Davalos on scoring 1,000 points…
"I did not know that, Coach White just told me a few days ago and I had no idea that it was happening. It is a nice surprise and I am grateful to have the opportunity to achieve that. It is a dream come true and I am very happy about it. I am excited for what it coming next."
Emilie Volk on her Senior Night…
"It is extremely special. The community we have here, and the group of kids, and the fans are all so supportive and incredible. It is special to be able to get to that point and I am so thankful to have gone through four years here. It is all just a collection of special moments and special people that put in a lot of hard work to make things happen. Having the opportunity to play is a dream come true."
Emilie Volk on finishing her season…
"I want to just continue to challenge myself to step up and expect more of myself as a team leader. I want to do the best that I can with every possession. I want to have fun with it because, with the tournament, anything can happen at any given moment. We have to keep the intensity and the fire going."
Next Up: Fresno State travels to UNLV on March 3 for its final regular season game. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
