'Dogs open home slate with 5-2 win over Utah

FRESNO, Calif. – In their first home dual match of the season, Fresno State started fast en route to knocking off Utah 5-2 on Saturday at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

"It was a big win today to beat a very good Utah team," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We defended our home and played well beyond our years. I am impressed with our young group as they continue to keep getting better day in and day out."

After Ndindi Ndunda and Olivia Noble teamed up to quickly dispatch Taylor Calton and Jena Cheng 6-2, the Bulldogs grabbed the doubles point on Court 3 were Emma Wilson and Galina Bykova scrapped by Whitney Turley and Alexia Petrovic 7-6(4). The 'Dogs pushed toward clinching the dual match early behind strong performances from their freshmen Katerina Stloukalova and Juliane Triebe. Stloukalova topped Margo Pletcher at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2, while Triebe ousted Jena Cheng 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3.

Fresno State took a straight-set defeat on Court 6 but rebounded with 6-4, 7-5 victories from senior Galina Bykova at No. 2 and freshman Ndindi Ndunda at No. 5 to give the Bulldogs the win.

Fresno State will return to action on Feb. 18 as the team hosts Oregon at noon.
