Fresno State Softball returns home for a three-game Mountain West series against San Jose State
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After striking out a season-high 10 batters and allowing only four hits through the first six innings, Fresno State sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung gave up a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to give UC Santa Barbara a 2-1 walk-off win on Wednesday afternoon at Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Bulldogs (25-18) scored in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by junior Savannah McHellon to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead and Dung struck out six straight in the fifth and sixth innings, but two singles and a double in the final frame by the Gauchos (25-20) would be enough to put them over the top.
The 'Dogs fall to 20-12 in nonconference games this year, including 5-2 against the Big West, and gave up a sixth-inning lead for the third time this season.
How it happened
Rivers led the game off with a double to left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Miranda Rohleder. Sophomore Morgan Howe then took a free pass to put runners on the corners with one out, but senior Kierra Willis struck out and sophomore Vanessa Hernandez fouled out to end the top of the first. Dung then entered the circle, struck out two batters, walked a pair, and got out of the first unharmed.
UCSB didn't record its first hit until the bottom of the third and Dung recorded two more strikeouts over the next two innings to bring her total to four. The next Bulldog base runner came in the top of the fourth when Willis took a one-out walk, but was left stranded.
The Bulldogs scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Freshman Haley Fuller doubled to center with one out and was pinch run for by senior Christina Rodriguez. McHellon came in the game to pinch hit for junior Katie Castellon and singled up the middle to send Rodriguez home. Dung then struck out six straight batters in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the 1-0 lead intact.
The Gauchos came up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, hit back-to-back one-out singles and the runners scored on a walk-off double.
