Head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on the 'Dogs showing at the USC Tournament....
"The USC tournament gave us a good look into what is transferring from our intense spring training. We were pumped to see our transition attacking numbers go way up. Maddy Halteman did a nice job in transition keeping our hitters in rhythm and she really pushed to get our middles involved on the slide. We won that slide battle time and time again and USC and Pepperdine had trouble defending it."
Head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on what individuals stood out and what the 'Dogs can continue to improve on...
"I was pleasantly surprised by our defense. We are a pretty good blocking team - certainly imposing - and our floor defense was better. I thought Taylor Slover and Haile Watson showed the most improvement and made great impacts for us. Taylor proved that she's ready to be a 6-rotation outside hitter - she was dependable, passed pretty well, could hit out of the back row and is so much stronger out-of-system than she was last season. Haile has become a better blocker and is much improved in front of the setter. On the slide, she's a natural and jumping out of the gym. We have a ton of offense - we can set anyone. But until our ball control improves, we'll have those moments of inconsistency. USC and Pepperdine are really strong teams. We came close to taking a game of USC again and we handled Pepperdine easily in the first set. I like where we are. We'll continue to improve throughout the spring and summer."
The 'Dogs continue their spring season on Saturday hosting Fresno Pacific at 10 a.m. in a scrimmage in North Gym that is free to the public.
