COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State volleyball junior Haile Watson will represent the Bulldogs on the 2017 Mountain West Global Challenge All-Star Volleyball Team, the conference announced on Friday.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Mountain West has sent an all-star team to Europe and Watson is the third Bulldog to participate joining Aleisha Coates in 2016 and Maci Murdock in 2014.
"I am truly blessed to be able to go to Europe with the Mountain West All-Stars," said Watson, who will enter her junior season next fall. "It is a great honor to represent Fresno State and show the Bulldog way. I hope to gain a lot of knowledge from this experience."
Watson is one of 12 Mountain West student-athletes selected to the team that will travel to Maribor, Slovenia, for several days of training sessions and friendly matches against national teams from the region. From July 10-15, the team will compete in the 2017 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, featuring junior national and club teams from throughout Europe. The last three Mountain West squads have each placed third in the Brijuni Division at the Global Challenge.
Watson is coming off her first season as a Bulldog in 2016 after spending her first two years at Eastern Washington. The 6'2 middle blocker from Couer D'Alene, Idaho started all 29 matches as a sophomore finishing sixth on the team with 120 kills. She led the team with 98 blocks, 15 solo, and had a season-high eight block assists twice in wins over Portland State and San Diego State.
"Haile is a great choice for MWC All-Star Tour," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "She was one of our most improved players in the gym this spring. She's a phenomenal athlete, but more than that, she is a really patient blocker and has tremendous skills hitting off one foot. She is a much improved in front of the setter - has better sight and range and think she'll be an impact player on this tour."
