Bulldogs fall at Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's hit .312 with a 10.0-5.5 edge in blocks in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-11) win over the Bulldogs on Friday in Moraga to begin weekend play in the Saint Mary's/USF Challenge.
Fresno State (4-4) had a 38-30 advantage in digs in the match but had a season-low one service ace while the Gaels had nine. Saint Mary's (3-4) won its home opener and improved to 3-1 on the year in matches against teams not ranked in the top-12 in Div. I.
Aubrey Folk had a match-high 11 kills with just three attack errors to hit .296 and had two blocks. Brielle Hefner had 10 kills and hit a solid .278 while Lauren Torres led the team with four blocks. Madelyn Halteman had a match-high 28 assists to go with six digs and Jacqueline Hutcheson led the way with 14 digs.
How it Happened
Saint Mary's was strong both offensively and defensively in the first set, hitting .524 with 11 kills and no errors and tallying five blocks. Folk started the set with five kills in her first five swings to lead the Bulldogs, but the Gaels had a 6-1 run in the middle of the set to pull away and won it 25-18.
After not recording a block in the first set the Bulldogs had three for their first three points of the second set. The Bulldogs held the Gaels to .200 hitting in the set and stayed close. Saint Mary's moved ahead 17-10 but the 'Dogs had four straight points to get within a 17-14 deficit. The Gaels answered with a 3-0 run and moved ahead 23-16 before withholding a late Bulldog charge to win 25-21.
It was all Gaels in the third set as the Bulldogs were held to just six kills. Saint Mary's hit .333 and had four service aces. The home team turned a 7-5 lead into a 17-7 advantage with a 10-2 run on its way to securing the match.
