Sophomore scores a career-high 22 points in Fresno State’s victory over the Aztecs.
FRESNO, Calif. – After a back-and-forth first half that resulted in a 27-25 lead for the Bulldogs, Kristina Cavey came alive on offense, 16 of her career-high 22 points in the final 14 minutes of the game to push the 'Dogs past San Diego State, 64-53, on Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening quarter was evenly matched and didn't yield much scoring as both teams hovered around 40 percent from the field. San Diego State led Fresno State 14-13 at the end of one as Maddi Utti led the way for the 'Dogs with six points.
The Bulldogs were more efficient on offense in the second period, scoring 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. They also held the Aztecs in check as SDSU shot just 36.4 percent for the quarter while tallying just 11 points. Fresno State took a 27-25 lead into the locker room as seven different Bulldogs scored in the opening half.
Fresno State increased its lead in the third quarter behind stingy defense and the offense of Kristina Cavey. The sophomore poured in eight points, including the Bulldogs' last six, in the period while the defense held San Diego State to 4-of-13 (30.8%) shooting. The 'Dogs took a 45-37 advantage into the fourth.
Again, it was Cavey leading the Bulldogs on offense as she logged eight of Fresno State's 19 fourth-quarter points. After the Aztecs pulled within four early in the quarter, the 'Dogs hit a 12-2 run with the last six coming from Cavey to open the lead up to 14. SDSU made a late run but the Bulldogs were able to fend off the Aztecs for the 11-point win.
Cavey led all scorers with 22 points, which set a new career-high, eclipsing her 21 against Eastern Washington in the season-opener.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jaime White on Kristina Cavey…
"I think she saw that her team needed somebody. Kristina is one of the biggest team players and I just think she felt the urgency. She was finding the glass and the bucket. I am very happy for her. She has done a great job."
On facing Air Force on Saturday…
"I think they are getting better. They are doing really well. They have their shooters and they have a nice point guard. We have to make sure we defend. Our last game with them was by no means an easy game. We had a 20-point lead at the half but Air Force never gives up. Hopefully our players have a little more attention and urgency for Saturday."
Kristina Cavey on what led to her 22 points on the night…
"I think it was a lot of getting back into the flow of things after I had my injury. Getting back into practice ad having the reps really helped. I got my confidence back and my teammates had some great plays as well. There are still things I need to work on like getting back into defense and also being able to play different positions."
On wanting the basketball…
"Obviously I want to make the best decision with the basketball so it wasn't necessarily just wanting the ball for me, but being able to do whatever was best with the ball when I got it. My teammates put me in great positions to be able to score it."
NEXT UP
Fresno State will be back at home on Saturday as the team clashes with Air Force in another Mountain West matchup. Tipoff for the Salute to Services game is slated for 2 p.m. PT.
