11/2/2018 9:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Delaney, Gamez, Utti each put up 20 points to help Fresno State pass the century mark in exhibition game.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's basketball team, hosting CSU Dominguez Hills in an exhibition matchup, maintained control throughout the game's entirety, crossing the 100-point threshold on their way to a dominant 53-point victory over the Toros, 102-49, on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs were led by the sophomore trio of Bree Delaney, Aly Gamez and Maddi Utti who each posted 20 points. Junior Kristina Cavey added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Â
"I thought we did a pretty good job," head coach Jaime White said. "I thought our press was good early. We got in transition really well tonight. I think we shot the 3 pretty well. It was a good team win. We got into a little bit of foul trouble in the first half, which is not necessarily fortunate since we're playing with low numbers right now. We have to be careful with that. Overall, I feel like it was a good break-in game for the girls. We're going to have tough competition with Northern Arizona so we're looking forward to getting there and getting our first road win."
Â
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got off to a hot start in the opening period, jumping out to a 12-4 lead at the first stoppage with six of those points coming from Utti. Fresno State finished out the period using that momentum to stretch the lead to 26-11, while Utti stayed hot at a perfect 5-of-5 with 10 points.
Â
Fresno State kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second period, building as high as a 30-point lead with under one minute remaining, taking a 55-27 lead into halftime. While CSU Dominguez Hills was held to just 34.5 percent shooting in the half along with giving up 12 turnovers, Utti kept her stellar night going. She finished the half at 7-of-8 from the floor with 16 points. The 'Dogs as a whole shot an impressive 56.8 percent from the field and were a perfect 8-of-8 from the stripe in the half.
Â
The third quarter was much of the same for the Bulldogs as they again built on their lead, holding the Toros to only 12 points. Fresno State increased its lead to 40 by the end of the quarter behind a 10-0 run that was capped off by a 3-pointer in the waning seconds. Four Bulldogs ended the quarter with double-digit points for the game, led by Utti and Gamez with 20 points each, as Fresno State led 79-39 at the end of the third.
Â
With an 11-0 run to start the quarter, which was more than CSU Dominguez Hills' 10 in the entire quarter, Fresno State continued its dominance in the fourth leading 90-39 with 7:14 left in the game.
