Third-quarter flurry powers 'Dogs past Milwaukee
11/20/2018 10:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's basketball team imposed their will for much Tuesday night's matchup with the Milwaukee Panthers in a 65-48 win at the Save Mart Center. As neither team could muster much separation through two-and-a-half quarters, a third-quarter surge by the 'Dogs that resulted in a 19-0 run proved to be the difference as the Panthers were unable to recover.
Â
Fresno State spread the wealth in the point column as four 'Dogs reached double figures. Kristina Cavey put up 14 points to go with eight rebounds, while Candice White added 10 points along with eight rebounds of her own. Bree Delaney chimed in off the bench with a team-high 15 points and six assists, and Aly Gamez notched 11 points as well on top of her four assists.
Â
How It Happened
Fresno State jumped out to a quick lead to start the game, going up 7-2 behind a pair of layups from White and Maddi Utti along with a 3-ball from with just over eight minutes left in the period. Milwaukee closed the gap soon after, tying the game 12-12 with 1:25 on the clock. The 'Dogs created separation once again, adding five points to close with a Delaney 3-pointer at the buzzer. Turnovers were a major factor in the period as 12 of Fresno State's 17 points came off of turnovers compared to none by Milwaukee.
Â
Fresno State carried its momentum into the second period, taking a 27-14 advantage with 3:03 remaining in the half through a 13-2 run that saw a pair of 3's from Delaney. The 'Dogs went cold though at the tail end of the half, missing their final four shots and allowing Milwaukee to go on a 10-0 run to close the half down 27-24.
Â
The Bulldogs' struggles continued in the third period, missing their first four shots and giving up three turnovers to open the half. Milwaukee took advantage, taking a 32-29 lead through an 8-2 start after back-to-back layups from Megan Walstad two-and-a-half minutes into the period. Fresno State took back control from that moment on with a layup from Delaney that was followed by a lay-in and-1 from Gamez to force a timeout from Milwaukee. Following the break in the action, the Bulldogs poured it on as White and Gamez drained back-to-back 3s, inspiring the team to knock down a few more jumpers to end the period up 46-32 on a 17-0 run.
Â
A layup from Delaney opened the fourth, but a free throw from Walstad ended the Bulldogs run at 19-0 as the 'Dogs led 48-32. Milwaukee kept fighting with three 3s in the period to stay alive, but Fresno State matched them with three of their own and the answers proved to be too much as the 'Dogs finished on top 65-48.
Team Notes
Bree Delaney – 15 points, 6 assists, 3 3-pointers
Fresno State will conclude its three-game home stand on Friday against UT Arlington at 5 p.m. PT in the Save Mart Center. The 'Dogs will then hit the road for the first time since the season opener to take on USC at 5 p.m. PT in Los Angeles.
