FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sport Services and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Carrie Coll is the chair of the NCAA Volleyball Selection Committee, which will be putting together the 64-team tournament to be announced on Sunday.
Coll left Fresno on Friday to fly to the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, where the committee will work together over the next three days to select, seed, and bracket the NCAA Div. I Championship. The field will be announced on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time on ESPNU and Coll is scheduled to be interviewed live during the selection show.
Coll is in her fourth season on the volleyball committee but is the chair for the first time this year, replacing Oregon Deputy Athletic Director and SWA Lisa Peterson. She was nominated and selected as chair by her peers on the committee. Coll has also previously served on the women's soccer committee (2002-06) and the women's golf committee (2008-10).
Each NCAA sport has a committee made up of administrators (and occasionally coaches) that monitor teams and conferences across the country and are charged with selecting the 32 at-large teams, seeding the 64 total teams (32 automatic qualifiers and 32 at-large), and bracketing within parameters. Those parameters include travel and geographic elements and avoiding conference matchups in first and second-round games.
The volleyball committee is 10 individuals that each serve a four-year term on the committee. Individuals are nominated by their conferences and the volleyball committee including six FBS representatives and four Division I or FCS representatives. One representative is from each of the five volleyball regions (East, South, Midwest, Southeast and West) and five members are selected at large with no more than three members from any region.
As the committee chair, Coll is additionally tasked with assisting in preparations for the national championship with the host, which is the University of Minnesota this year, and the NCAA staff. She also works with the NCAA staff on 1st and 2nd round and regional host preparations, including hosting manuals, policies, site representative assignment, officials selection and assignment, and more.
Coll is in her fourth academic year at Fresno State after spending 14 years with the Mountain West Conference, serving as the Associate Commissioner for Championships over the last 10.
