Record-breaking 60 Fresno State student-athletes named to the academic all-mw team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresno State had a record-breaking 60 student-athletes named to the Fall 2017 Academic All-Mountain West Team, announced Tuesday. 60 selections is the most for Fresno State since joining the Mountain West in 2012. Fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Fresno State has had 50 or more student-athletes selected to the fall team. Â
The conference announced that the 618 student-athletes named to the 2017 Academic All-MW team is a new league record. The mark surpasses the previous conference record of 614 fall-semester honorees, set during the 2016-17 academic year.
As an institution, Fresno State's 60 honorees was the fourth-best in the conference.
Football had the most honorees with 24 named to the Fall Academic All-MW team. Women's soccer had 17, volleyball had nine, men's cross country had four and women's cross country had four.
The football team (24) and soccer team (19) set new all-time bests for number of all-academic selections since joining the Mountain West. The soccer team's mark tied for the best in the conference and the football team was fourth-best.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
Overall, the Bulldog student-athletes combined to post a 3.143 Grade Point Average. Fresno State had 318 student-athletes earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher last fall. 182 student-athletes, or 37 percent of the student-athlete population had a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 57 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall.
