Klyuchnikova wins high jump at Stanford Invitational

Junior high jumper has placed in the top two during each of her first three outdoor competitions.
STANFORD, Calif./SAN MARCOS, Texas – On the final day of a split weekend for the Fresno State track and field team, Varvara Klyuchnikova continued her strong start to the outdoor season by winning the high jump collegiate event at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The junior's final cleared height of 1.75m/5'-7" ranks fourth program history is the second-best mark in the Mountain West this season.
Klyuchnikova's top finish was one of the 10 top-10 finishes for the Bulldogs on the day, and one of six in the top five. In the women's discus invitational, Kayla Hopkins placed second with a mark of 53.62m/175'-11", while Yazmin Torres finished seventh at 50.32m/165'-1".
In the men's pole vault, Shane Atkinson increased on his previous season-best clearance with a height of 4.50m/14'-9" to place sixth. In the women's hammer collegiate, Manpreet Grewal finished 10th with a throw of 49.04m/160'-11".
In Texas at the Bobcat Invitational, Fresno State picked up three top-three results, led by Morgan Lewis' second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. The freshman clocked a wind-aided time of 13.65. In the 200 meters, Njeri Omawahleh recorded a wind-aided time of 23.78 to place third. Two days after posting one of the top times this season in the Mountain West in the 1500 meters, freshman Ellie Leather did the same in the 1500 meters, placing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.28 which sits second in the MW.
In the triple jump, the Bulldogs had two athletes finish in the top 10, led by Tijana Antic. On her second attempt, the sophomore landed a personal best jump of 12.23m/40'-1" to place fifth. With of personal record of her own, Breanna Covington place seventh with a mark of 12.09m/39'-8".
Next weekend will see Fresno State compete at the Chico State Distance Carnival and Twilight Invitational on April 6 and 7.
