FRESNO, Calif. – Rachel Minogue doubled twice and drove in four runs while Samantha Mejia recorded her second straight complete game victory as Fresno State defeated San Diego State, 5-1, on Saturday at Margie Wright Diamond.
In front of a season-high crowd of 1,561 fans on Bark in the Park day, Fresno State (28-16, 11-3 MW) evened the series and won for the 11th time in the last 12 games after a setback against San Diego State (14-27, 5-9 MW) on Friday.
Â
The 'Dogs scored all five of their runs in the first three innings as Minogue had a 3-RBI double in the first and a 1-run double in the third. Mejia struck out three and walked just one as she improved to 5-0 with a 0.49 ERA in MW games, having allowed just two earned runs and 16 hits over 28.1 innings against conference foes.
Â
How it Happened
After SDSU scored twice in its first at-bat on Friday the Aztecs got the first two runners aboard on Saturday but Mejia pitched out of the jam, thanks in part to a spectacular caught stealing in which shortstop Katie Castellon took a throw from catcher Hayleigh Galvan on a dive towards third base and tagged out the runner (watch).
Â
In the bottom of the first the Aztecs got the first out before two walks and a single from Galvan loaded the bases, and Minogue unloaded them with a double to the gap in left center (watch). In the bottom of the second, Kaitlyn Jennings drew a one-out walk, stole second, and would score on an RBI double from Castellon (watch).
Â
The 'Dogs flashed the leather again in the third inning as third baseman Schuylar Broussard made a diving catch in foul territory and doubled off a runner at first to end the inning (watch). In the bottom half Galvan walked to begin the inning and pinch runner Brooke Coates came in to score on Minogue's second double of the game (watch).
Â
The Aztecs went to the bullpen after the double and reliever Alex Formby would go on to retire 11 of the 12 batters she faced, closing the game with four hitless innings and just one walk to keep the Bulldog lead at 5-0. San Diego State got a run in the fifth inning on a leadoff single from Kiera Wright and an RBI double from Shelby Thompson but that was all Mejia would permit.
Â
Notable
Fresno State, which won each of its first four MW series this season, will look to make it 5-for-5 in the rubber game against San Diego State on Sunday at noon.
