WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fresno State's season came to a close on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Doubles Championship as the Bulldogs doubles team of Georgia Lawson and Emma Wilson were defeated 7-6(4), 6-2 by fifth-ranked Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Fresno State battled through the opening set, pushing the Rebels to the limit. Fresno State twice served with the set on line, leading 5-4 and 6-5. Ole Miss though forced the first-set tiebreak and won 7-4. Seeing their early momentum slip away, the Bulldogs found themselves down quickly in the second a set the Rebels pulled out to 5-0 lead before Fresno State could get on the board. The 'Dogs claimed the next two points but Ole Miss would finish the match with a 6-2 scoreline in the second set. Â
Bortles and Hartono were the third top 10 doubles team that the Bulldogs' pair had faced this season, and second in a row after seeing UCLA's top team two weeks ago.
