FRESNO, Calif. – First year Fresno State volleyball head coach Jonathan Winder made the first addition to his roster with outside hitter/middle blocker Kava Durr joining the program for the 2018 season.
A 2017 Under Armour All-America honorable mention selection and Prep Volleyball High School All-American special mention, Durr joins a group of 12 returning Bulldogs who will play their first season under Winder this Fall.
"This is a huge leap forward for Bulldogs volleyball!" Winder said. "I have seen Kava develop over the past few years into an electric volleyball player. We are thrilled that she chose to be an integral part of building the Fresno State Volleyball program to the standards that we hold. I am proud to have the opportunity to coach her and help her achieve the dreams that she has."
A native of Puyallup, Wash., Durr starred for Emerald Ridge HS and was a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee following the 2017 season. She was named MVP of the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) as well as team MVP and made the WIAA 4A All-State team as she set a school record with 444 kills during her senior season, the 3rd highest total in the state of Washington.
The 6-1 Durr also tallied 58 solo blocks as a senior after she posted a school-record 67 solo blocks as a sophomore. Despite missing most of her junior year due to injury, Durr tallied 729 kills and 136 solo blocks while hitting .295 in 246 sets played during her high school career.
"Kava is a resilient, hard-working, and well-loved student-athlete," Winder added. "Her athleticism, length, and talent will bring an immediate positive impact to the short and long term success of our volleyball program. She can play a variety of positions at a high level and knows what it takes to win at a national level."
She led her team to a conference title and a 3rd place finish in the state tournament during her senior season and helped the team place second in the state as a freshman and sophomore. She has been selected to several USA Volleyball national training programs and in 2016 was a USA Girls Youth National Team prospect.
Durr was very heavily recruited as she also received interest from teams including fellow MW schools Colorado State and Boise State as well as Virginia, Missouri, and Iowa State.
Kava also ran track as a freshman in high school and was a district qualifier in the 300 Meter Hurdles and a state qualifier as part of two relay teams. Her father, Kris, ran track at Washington State and competed in the 400 Meters at the 1984 US Olympic Trials.
