FRESNO, Calif. – Terrance J. "Terry" Tumey was appointed Fresno State Athletics' next Director of Athletics on Thursday, June 21, announced by Fresno State University President Joseph I. Castro on Twitter. Tumey was introduced to the Fresno State community in a press conference on Monday morning in the Save Mart Center.
Â
"I am thrilled to welcome Terry Tumey to Fresno State," Castro said. "Terry is energetic, thoughtful and highly respected by his colleagues across the nation. His unique background as a successful football player at UCLA, professional record of distinction working for the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, and as Athletic Director of three different collegiate programs make him the ideal person to lead Fresno State's Athletic Department. With Terry's strong leadership, I am confident that our Bulldog athletic program will boldly rise to new heights of success."
Tumey most recently served as the Director of Athletics at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, a unified Division III athletics program in Southern California. The schools that make up the singular athletic program under his watch since 2016 are Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Scripps College. In addition to CMS, Tumey held the director of athletics title at two other institutions, one at the Division I level, UC Davis (2012-15), as well as one that he oversaw transition to the Division II level from NAIA, Dominican University of California (2009-12).
"I am excited to be here and to accept the position of Director of Athletics here at Fresno State," said Tumey in the introductory press conference on Monday. "I would like to thank every member who participated in the search process, the diverse leadership within the Fresno State community, the search chair, Debbie Astone, our talented coaches, our vital academic partners, our vested and committed community leaders, and last but not least, our dedicated student body. Your keen insights and thoughtful conversations, what makes Fresno State attractive, and your belief in what we can accomplish here was definitely the deciding factor as our family has made a commitment to Fresno State."
While Tumey was director of athletics at UC Davis, he helped expand the profile of the university regionally and nationally, and secured funding in excess of $11 million to support student achievements. In his time at Dominican, Tumey led a $4.5 million capital campaign for DUC's facilities in its transition to Division II, while in academia the athletics department received the Pacific West Conference's (PWC) Academic Achievement Award for highest student-athlete grade-point average for three-straight years.
Tumey has a rich history in football, having turned a playing career at UCLA (1984-87), where he was a three-time All-Pacific-10 Conference defensive lineman, into a coaching career. He was a graduate assistant and full-time assistant coach at UCLA, working with the Bruins from 1992-98Â and then moved to the NFL ranks for two years with the Denver Broncos (1999-2000).
Â
After coaching, Tumey joined the San Francisco 49ers staff as a player personnel assistant in 2001, moved up to assistant to the player personnel director in 2003, then assumed the role of director of football administration in 2004 until departing for his first AD job in 2009. As the director of football administration he supervised all fiscal responsibilities of the 49ers' football operations, which carried a budget of more than $35 million. He also managed administrative issues for team employees including the coaching staff, oversaw contract negotiations and dispute resolution, worked with the NFL on game scheduling, and led the team's training camp relocation.
Â
Tumey earned a B.A. in political science from UCLA with a concentration in business economics in 1988 and an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management with a focus on entrepreneurship and strategy in 1993. Those two degrees have fueled more than two decades of coaching and administrative excellence in collegiate and professional athletics.
Â
Tumey is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is married to Dr. Candace Gonzales Tumey and has two daughters, Cameron & Simone.Â
Â
"Terry and I worked together with the San Francisco 49ers. He is a great man and will be a fantastic leader of our Athletic program. I'm glad he is now one of us. Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred."
Terry Donahue, Former Head Football Coach, UCLA and Former General Manager, San Francisco 49ers
"Terry will do a great job at Fresno State. He's a very smart guy. He's been really well-educated and he has a wide range of experiences at a variety of levels, all the way from where was at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, to the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. I think that experience will prove to be extremely valuable to him and to Fresno State as he gets into all the things that he will have to do at Fresno State.
Â
"The other thing I would say is Terry is extremely likable. If you can't get along with Terry Tumey, then the problem's yours. He'll do a nice job of being warm and friendly to people, and I think he'll bring an energy with him that will be really good for the athletic department. If I was coaching again, I'd like him to be my AD."
Anthony Lynn, Head Coach, Los Angeles Chargers
"Terry Tumey is a consummate professional and the ideal person for this opportunity. His experiences as a student-athlete, coach, NFL executive, and educator will be an asset to the Fresno State community. I'm excited for Fresno State under Terry's leadership."
