League-leading 16 Bulldogs named to Phil Steele's Preseason Mountain West Team

The Fresno State football team has earned a league-best 16 selections on Phil Steele's Preseason Mountain West Team.
FRESNO, Calif. - With less than two months remaining until the 'Dogs season opener against Idaho in Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 1, the Fresno State football team has earned a league-best 16 selections on Phil Steele's Preseason Mountain West Team.
Predicted by college football guru Phil Steele to finish first in the West Division, the Bulldogs had a pair of first-team selections in senior wide receiver KeeSean Johnson and junior linebacker Jeffrey Allison. Six 'Dogs were named to the second team in senior quarterback Marcus McMaryion, senior wide receiver Jamire Jordan, junior tight end Jared Rice, senior offensive lineman Micah St. Andrew, senior linebacker George Helmuth and junior cornerback Jaron Bryant.Â
Five additional Bulldogs were named to the third team in sophomore running back Jordan Mims, redshirt senior wide receiver Michiah Quick, sophomore offensive lineman Netane Muti, and junior safeties Mike Bell and Juju Hughes. Senior offensive lineman Christian Cronk, senior linebacker James Bailey and junior punter Blake Cusick rounded out the Fresno State selections on the fourth team.Â
Johnson returns to spearhead the receiving corps after leading the 'Dogs in receptions (77), receiving yards (1,013) and touchdowns (8) in 2017 while Allison returns to anchor a defense after leading the team with 126 tackles.
McMaryion returns for his second season pacing the Bulldog offense after passing for 2,726 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago. Jordan ranked third on the team in receptions (52), receiving yards (562) as a junior and enters his senior season with 118 career receptions for 1,815 yards. Rice played in 13 games in 2017 making 22 receptions for 388 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and St. Andrew enters his senior season with 29 consecutive games started and was member of an offensive line unit that ranked third in the nation in sacks allowed last season.
Defensively, Helmuth ranked second on the team with 89 tackles and added eight tackles for loss and four sacks while Bryant led the team with four interceptions, two that he returned for touchdowns, and added 67 tackles.
After leading the team in rushing as a true freshman, Mims looks to build upon his 627 rushing yards and six touchdowns from 2017. Quick looks to get in the wide receiving mix adding depth this season after transferring from Oklahoma prior to last season. In three seasons with the Sooners from 2014-16, Quick played in 30 games and is a 2014 graduate of Central East High School in Fresno. Muti started all 14 games along the offensive line as a redshirt freshman in 2017 helping the 'Dogs rank third in the nation in tackles for loss allowed.
The safety tandem of Bell and Hughes return for their junior seasons after Bell finished third on the team with 77 tackles and Hughes tied for fourth with 71 stops. Bell added three tackles for loss while Hughes added seven TFLs as each also had an interception.
Rounding out the Bulldog selections are Cronk on the offensive line as he enters his senior season with 26 consecutive starts, Bailey and his 177 career tackles and Cusick who has 145 punts and a 40.3 yard per average over the last two seasons.
Fresno State's 16 selections led the Mountain West as Boise State (15), Utah State (14), Wyoming (13), San Diego State (12), Nevada (11), Colorado State (9), UNLV (7), San Jose State (7), New Mexico (6), Hawai'i (4) and Air Force (2) rounded out the remainder of the selections.
