Diamond 'Dogs in the Pros: Fall Update

After taking a glance at how the 25 former Diamond 'Dogs in major/minor league baseball were performing throughout the spring and summer, let's take one final look at the professional Bulldogs as the minor league regular season wrapped over the Labor Day weekend.
The MLB regular season ends on Sun., Sept. 30 with the MLB Playoffs starting on Oct. 2. The World Series will be held Oct. 23-31 with the team with a better regular season record earning home field advantage.
Doug Fister, Pitcher, Texas Rangers, 10th year in MLB, first with Rangers
After spending the 2017 season with the Boston Red Sox, Fister joined his sixth MLB ball club in November when he signed with the Texas Rangers.
Fister, who finished 5-9 with the Red Sox last season, was recently ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 season on Aug. 13 due to a strained right knee.
The Merced native went 1-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 12 starts notching 40 strikeouts in 66.0 innings of work and picked up his lone win in his Ranger debut on March 30 tossing five innings while limiting the defending World Series champion Houston Astros to four hits, one earned run, three walks and three strikeouts in a 5-1 victory.
Fister tossed a season-high seven shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox on May 17 holding Chicago to six hits, no walks and recorded six strikeouts.
Aaron Judge, Outfielder, New York Yankees, second official year in MLB/Yankees
After winning the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year and playing in 155 games last season finishing while hitting 52 home runs, Judge has continued his strong play throughout his second campaign earning his second All-Star game nod before recently being sidelined after being hit by a pit on the wrist against the Kansas City Royals on July 26. He did recently start swinging a bat as he looks to return to the Yankees lineup soon.
Appearing in 99 games for the Yankees, Judge is hitting .285 from the plate hitting 26 home runs with 61 RBIs while drawing 68 walks with a .398 on-base percentage and a .548 slugging percentage.
The Linden, Calif., native has 28 multi-hit games this season, including eight three-hit performances with back-to-back three-hit outings on July 20 & 21 against the New York Mets. In addition, Judge has scored multiple runs in 16 games while driving in multiple runs in 13 contests.
The Yankees, who are currently 89-54 are currently 8.5 games back of first place Boston in the AL East, lead the Wild Card standings by 2.5 games over the Oakland Athletics with 19 games remaining.
In the MLB All-Star Game on July 17 in Washington, D. C., Judge hit a second-inning home run as the American League took home a 8-6 win over the National League.

After playing in 27 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017, Luplow spent the first half of the season in Triple-A with the Indianapolis Indians of the International League before being promoted to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 6.
In 25 games with the Pirates, Luplow is hitting .204 with 11 hits, a double, triple, three home runs, five RBIs and 12 runs scored with a pair of multi-hit games.
He was sent back down to the Indians on Aug. 21 playing in Indianapolis' final 11 games of the season with hits in nine of those games. In 88 total games this season with the Indians, the Clovis native had 25 doubles, three triples and eight home runs adding 41 runs, 49 RBIs, 23 multi-hit games and has had three three-hit performances.
With the Indians' season complete on Sept. 3, Luplow was recalled to the Pirates on Sept. 4 for Pittsburgh's final 24 games of the regular season and got the start that night in left field for the Pirates in a 7-3 over the Cincinnati Reds with a single and a run scored. He added a game-winning pinch-hit home run on Friday night against the Miami Marlins in the Pirates' 5-3 win. Pittsburgh is currently 71-71 on the season and 7.5 games outside the second Wild Card spot.

After signing with the Nationals in January and starting the season in Triple-A with the Syracuse Chiefs, Miller was promoted to the big league club on May 25 and has been lights out since.
In 44 relief appearances for Washington this season, Miller has posted a 6-1 record with a 3.97 ERA working 47.2 innings while striking out 54 and only walking 15.
Miller has thrown a season-high 3.0 innings twice and struck out a season-best five against Atlanta on June 2. His six wins surpassed his previous career total of five through his first three MLB seasons and rank fourth on the team and first among relief pitchers.
On Aug. 27, Miller converted his first save of the season working a perfect bottom of the ninth inning in a 5-3 win at the Philadelphia Phillies and added his second save of the season on Sept. 1. The Nationals are currently 71-72 and are 8 games outside the second Wild card spot in the National League.

The seventh former Bulldog to play in the major leagues this season, Taylor Ward made his professional debut with the Angels on Aug. 14 finishing an impressive 2-for-3 with a single, double, run scored, RBI and walk in a 7-3 win at the San Diego Padres.
In 23 games with the Angels, Ward has 17 hits with two doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored and nine RBIs. Ward had a pair of hits on Aug. 18 and hit his first career home run at the Texas Rangers and hit his first home run at home on Aug. 24 against the Houston Astros.
Ward started the season in Double-A Mobile appearing in 42 games hitting a robust .345 from the dish with 51 hits, including eight doubles, six home runs, 25 RBIs and 26 runs scored while registering an on-base percentage of .423 and a slugging percentage of .520.
He was named a Southern League All-Star, but was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on June 2 so he did not play in the game. He went on to play in 60 games for the Bees from June 2 through Aug. 12 hitting .352 with 80 hits, 18 doubles and eight home runs, 35 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He tallied 22 multi-hit games and had two 4-for-4 performances on June 19 and July 4.

Wilson has made 63 relief appearances on the mound for the Cubs this season striking out 66 batters in 51.1 innings while recording a 4-4 record with a 2.98 ERA.
The Clovis native has only allowed 17 earned runs this season and has notched four wins, most recently against Washington on Aug. 12, and now has at least four wins in each of the last four seasons.
Wilson, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Aug. 18, recorded his 400th career strikeout on Aug. 31 against the Philadelphia Phillies and had a season-high four against the New York Mets on June 2. The Cubs have the best record in the National League at 83-59 and lead the NL Central by 2 games over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wynns made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles on June 5 picking up a single in his first career at-bat going on to play in 10 games before being sent back down to Triple-A Norfolk on June 28.
After nine games with the Tides, Wynns was recalled back to the big league club on July 14 and has continued to play in Baltimore appearing in 30 total games this season hitting .259 with 21 hits, two doubles, three home runs, nine RBIs and 15 runs scored.
Wynns scored a season-high three runs on Aug. 29 going 2-for-3 with an RBI in a 10-5 win at home over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Justin Haley, Pitcher, Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox), seventh professional season
A sixth-round selection of the Boston Red Sox in 2012, Haley made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2017 before returning to the Red Sox last August and spent the beginning of this season in Triple-A Pawtucket making 12 starts going 4-6 mark with a 3.06 ERA striking out 54 in 61.2 innings.
Haley got promoted this season to the Red Sox on June 8 and made four relief appearances on the mound making his Boston debut on June 13 throwing two innings in a 5-1 win over Baltimore.
The Sacramento native, who played for the 'Dogs in 2011 & '12, was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 2 and remained there for the remainder of the season. In 22 Triple-A starts this season, Haley went 6-8 with a 3.80 ERA with 107 strikeouts in 113.2 innings for the Pawtucket Red Sox who finished the season 66-73 overall.
He tossed a season-high 7.0 innings on May 29 in a 5-1 win over Norfolk (Orioles AAA) and struck out a season-best nine on July 12 against Syracuse (Nationals AAA).

Lee was promoted twice in 2018 moving on to Double-A Jacksonville on June 22 before being called up to Triple-A New Orleans on July 28.
In 22 games in relief on the mound at A-Advanced Jupiter to start the season, Lee went 6-2 with a sparse 1.45 ERA notching 25 strikeouts in 31.0 innings only allowing five earned runs while holding opponents to a .174 average as he was named a Florida State League All-Star.
The Dinuba native made his Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp debut on June 22 tossing two shutout innings in a 10-3 win over the Mississippi Braves (Atlanta AA) and notched his first win in Double-A on June 26 working an inning in a hard-fought 6-5 win over Mississippi. Lee finished his short stint in Jacksonville with a 1-0 record and 19 strikeouts in 12 relief appearances finishing with three saves and did not allow a single earned run in 15 innings of work.
Lee kept his hot pitching going at Triple-A New Orleans making 10 appearances out of the bullpen posting a 1-1 record with a 3.38 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 16 innings. In his Baby Cakes debut on July 29, Lee struck out four over two innings and had multiple strikeouts in seven outings as New Orleans finished the season 69-70 overall.

Muno finished his second season with the Rainers appearing in 61 games totaling 39 hits with nine doubles, a triple and home run to go along with 20 runs scored and 23 RBIs.
After a 2-for-4 performance on June 24 against the Salt Lake Bees (Angels AAA) with a run scored and RBI in a 5-4 win, the Long Beach native was placed on the 7-day disabled list the following day where he finished the season.
AA Level
Jimmy Lambert, Pitcher, Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox), third professional season
Lambert was promoted to Double-A-Birmingham on June 27 after making 13 starts on the mound in A-Advanced Winston-Salem notching a 5-7 record with a 3.95 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 70.2 innings.
The San Dimas, Calif., native, who was named the 2016 Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Year, made his AA debut on June 29 starting against the Jackson Generals (Diamondbacks AA) making a quality start tossing six innings allowing four hits, one earned run, three walks with six strikeouts on his way to a victory in a 8-1 win for the Barons.
In four more starts, Lambert went 2-1 with back-to-back wins on July 9 & 14 tossing seven innings apiece combining for 19 strikeouts. In his July 14 start against the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA), Lambert only allowed one hit over seven innings as he took a no-hit bid into the seventh striking out 10 in a 3-0 win.

Now in his second season with the Travelers, Mariscal played in 120 regular season games for the Travelers collecting 116 hits, 17 doubles, three triples and seven home runs, scored 58 runs and drove in 60 RBIs while playing primarily at third base. Mariscal finished with 30 multi-hit games in the regular season closing out the regular season on Sept. 3 with a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored in a 8-3 win.
A Texas League All-Star, Mariscal was one of six Travelers to represent the team in the All-Star Game on June 26, the Fresno native was recently selected to the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League which begins on Oct. 9.
The Travelers claimed the Texas League North Division first half title with a 35-35 record and finished second in the second half going 36-33 to complete a 71-68 record. Arkansas advanced to the Texas League playoffs falling in five games to the Tulsa Drillers (Dodgers AA) tallying two hits and two runs scored in five games.

Ricky Tyler Thomas, Pitcher, Down East Wood Ducks (Texas Rangers), second professional season
Promoted to the Chicago Cubs' Class A South Bend to start the season, Thomas made 14 starts on the mound in 15 appearances for the Cubs and had a 3-5 record with a 2.88 ERA. He notched 81 strikeouts in 75.0 innings tossing five or more innings in 10 starts and had six appearances of six or more strikeouts.
On July 19, Thomas was traded from the Cubs to the Texas Rangers as part of a deal that sent major leaguer Jesse Chavez to Chicago. Thomas was assigned to the Rangers' Class A Hickory Crawdads making three starts with his final start on Aug. 5 going five innings allowing only two hits, one earned run while striking out five.
Thomas was promoted one final time to A-Advanced Down East appearing in four games for the Wood Ducks, including three starts. He picked up a save in his first appearance on Aug. 14 and struck out five over five innings on Aug. 26.

Ryan Dobson, Infielder, Kane County Cougars (Arizona Diamondbacks), second professional season
Dobson played in 26 games for the Hillsboro Hops from June 15 to July 18 hitting a standout .363 with 33 hits, six doubles, nine RBIs and 19 runs scored finishing his time in Oregon on an 11-game hitting streak before being promoted to the Kane County Cougars on July 19.
In 31 games in Kane County, a suburb of Chicago, Dobson hit .192 with 19 hits, five for extra-bases and added eight RBIs and 15 runs scored. In his second to final game of the season with the Cougars on Aug. 31, Dobson went his first professional home run with a second inning two-run longball in a 10-3 win over the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals A).

A first-team All-Mountain West pitcher this past spring, Gonzalez was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth round and appeared in 20 games in relief for the State College Spikes this season with one start on Aug. 2.
Finishing with a 1-1 record with a 4.99 ERA, Gonzalez made a pair of saves while throwing 30.2 innings striking out 31 and only walking 10. He notched at least one strikeout in 16 of his 20 appearances, including a season-high five on Aug. 29.
After the Spikes' season finished on Sept. 3, Gonzalez moved up to the Class A Peoria Chiefs for the Midwest League playoffs series against Quad Cities (Houston A) with the Chiefs sweeping the three-game series with wins on Sept. 5 & 6 followed by a two more wins in the MWL Western Division finals over Cedar Rapids on Sept. 8 & 9.
The Chiefs host the first two games of the Midwest League Championship series against Stone and the Bowling Green Hot Rods starting Wednesday (Sept. 12).
Jesse Medrano, Infielder, West Virginia Power (Pittsburgh Pirates), second professional season
After making five appearance this spring with the A-Advanced Bradenton Marauders, Medrano moved down to Class A West Virginia Power on June 8 and finished the season making 48 appearances with the South Atlantic League club.
The Concord, Calif., native hit .229 from the plate with 36 hits, nine doubles and two home runs, scored 21 runs and drove in 22 RBIs while accumulating six multi-hit games. Medrano went for a season-high four hits on July 27 in a 7-2 win over Asheville (Colorado A) with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. The Power finished third in the SAL Northern Division with a 71-62 overall record.

Ramirez has spent time this season with both the rookie ball Elizabethton Twins and Class A Cedar Rapids. In five relief appearances with Elizabethton, Ramirez went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA with nine strikeouts in seven innings and had a save on June 30.
Ramirez was promoted to Cedar Rapids on July 5 and has made 12 relief appearances tossing 17 innings with 18 strikeouts and has notched two saves since his promotion.
The Kernals won the Midwest League Western Division second half with a 45-25 mark and opened the MWL playoffs with a two-game sweep over the Beloit Snappers with wins on Sept. 6 & 7 as Ramirez worked a scoreless inning of relief in game one. Cedar Rapids advanced to the MWL Western Division finals facing the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals) falling in two games on Sept. 8 & 9.

An undrafted free agent signing by the San Francisco Giants after this June's MLB Draft, Santa Cruz pitched in 20 games across three different levels for four different teams over the last two-and-half months.
He made his first professional appearance with the AZL Giants Black on June 20 followed by two appearances for the AZL Giants Orange before being promoted to Class A Augusta on July 3.
In six appearances in Georgia for the South Atlantic League team, Santa Cruz threw 9.2 innings with 10 strikeouts before moving down to Short-Season Salem-Keizer for two games. He was then recalled back to Augusta on Aug. 1 for three more games tossing four innings with four strikeouts before one final trip to Salem, Ore., for four appearances with nine strikeouts in 11.2 innings.
He was recalled back to Augusta for the final week of the regular season on Aug. 28 pitching in two more games throwing three innings with two strikeouts.
Fred Schlichtholz, Pitcher, Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres), second professional season
Schlichtholz appeared in 28 games in relief for the Single-A Fort Wayne TinCaps this season going 2-3 with a 3.83 ERA throwing 47.0 innings with 39 strikeouts while only walking 16. He tossed a season-high three innings on June 28 allowing only one hit with two strikeouts in a 5-4 win over Lake County (Indians AA).
The Coronado, Calif., native had 14 multi-strikeout performances with a season-best five on Aug. 25 retiring all five batters via a strikeout in a 3-2 win over South Bend (Cubs A).
A Bulldog from 2014-17, Schlichtholz made one spot relief appearance for Triple-A El Paso on June 2 throwing three shutout innings while only allowing two hits and striking out four in a 8-4 loss to the Sacramento River Cats (Giants AAA).

Stone played in 10 games for the Class A Charlotte Stone Crabs hitting .200 from the plate with six hits in 30 at-bats and scored three runs while drawing four walks before moving down to Class A-Short Season Hudson Valley on June 16.
In 27 games with the New York-Penn League team, Stone hit .290 with 27 hits, five doubles, two triples and four home runs, drove in 13 RBIs and scored 16 runs while slugging .516. In a 2-1 win over Vermont (Oakland SS) on July 22, Stone was a home run shy of the cycle finishing with a single, double and triple and scored both of the Renegades' runs.
Stone received a promotion to Class A Bowling Green on Aug. 6 playing in 22 games for the Hot Rods hitting .203 with 15 hits, including seven for extra-bases and added eight RBIs and 13 runs scored. In a 13-9 win over Dayton (Cincinnati A) on Aug. 19, Stone again came within a home run of the cycle scoring two runs and driving in two RBIs.
The Hot Rods won both the first and second halves of the Eastern Division of the Midwest League and its 90-49 overall record was the best in the league by over nine games. Bowling Green opened the MWL playoffs against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto A) on Sept. 5 & 6 with a two-game sweep before downing the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit A) in two games in the MWL Eastern Division finals over the weekend with a 6-5 win on Sept. 8 and a 3-1 win on Sept. 9.

Aaron Arruda, Infielder, Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics), second professional season
After playing in 45 games with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2017, the two-time First-Team All-MW selection was back in Vermont this summer appearing in 45 games hitting .199 from the plate with 31 hits, four doubles, four home runs, 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored while drawing 21 walks.
Finishing the season with a combined on-base and slugging percentage of .600, Arruda had a season-high three hits on Aug. 3 smacking a two-run home run and scored three runs in a 15-5 win over Hudson Valley. Vermont finished second in the NYPL Stedler Division with a 39-37 overall record.

In his first professional season, Batesole appeared in 46 games for the Short-Season Lowell Spinners finishing the campaign hitting .285 with 43 hits, three doubles, one triple, 11 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
The Clovis native finished with 10 multi-hit games and had a season-high three hits on Aug. 1 driving in two RBIs and scored a run in a 8-2 win over Hudson Valley.
Batesole was one of four Spinners to represent the club in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Aug. 14 recording a double.

Burks played in 13 games with the GCL Tigers West to start his first season before getting promoted to Connecticut on July 13 seeing action in 24 games for the Short-Season team.
Burks hit .200 from the plate in 80 at-bats collecting 16 hits with a double, triple and home run, six RBIs and 12 runs scored and finished with five multi-hit games.

Mundell appeared in 18 games with Staten-Island where he was outstanding in relief sporting a 4-3 overall record with a 1.87 ERA. He converted four of six save opportunities tossing 33.2 innings striking out 33 while only allowing seven earned runs and 10 walks.
He only allowed earned runs in four of his 18 appearances while striking out at least one in 16 outings with 10 multi-strikeouts games. Mundell struck out a season-high five in three shutout innings on July 24
Rookie Level
Jared Akins, Outfielder, Elizabethton Twins (Minnesota Twins), second professional season
Akins started the season playing in six games with Elizabethton in the Rookie League recording 11 hits and scoring 11 runs before being promoted to Class A Cedar Rapids on June 28.
He played in 18 games for the Kernals with 14 hits, seven runs scored and eight RBIs and had a three-hit outing in his final game on July 27 before being sent back down to Elizabethton a day later playing in 16 games finishing with multi-hit games in his final two regular season games on Aug. 27 & 28 before the Appalachian League playoffs started on Aug. 31.
The Twins defeated the Kingsport Mets in best-of-three game series with a 5-2 win in game three on Sept. 2 advancing to the Appalachian League championship series winning game one, 7-4 on Sept. 4 followed by a 2-1 win a day later to clinch its second straight Appalachian League championship.
