Diamond 'Dogs complete summer ball

With classes beginning next week, Fresno State Baseball student-athletes will be returning to campus as we take one final look at how the 21 'Dogs performed this summer in leagues across the country.
Zach Ashford, Outfielder, YD Red Sox (Cape Cod League)
Ashford, a soon-to-be senior, played for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League and continued to light it up offensively after earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors this spring.
In 42 regular season games, the Clovis native hit .314 from the plate for the eighth-highest batting average in the Cape Cod League. Ashford tallied 43 hits, five doubles, nine RBIs, 27 runs and eight stolen bases while drawing 16 walks.
After reaching base in all but one of the 'Dogs 54 games this season, Ashford was able to reach base in 37 of the 44 games he played in this summer for Y-D with base hits in 34 games, including 10 multi-hit performances.
The Buchanan High School graduate got off to a blazing start to the season with a four-hit performance in Y-D's season-opening 10-9 win over the Bourne Braves on June 12 and ended the summer with base hits in 12 of the final 14 games he got at least one at bat in.
Ashford finished as the third-toughest batter to strike out in the Cape Cod League this summer and went 4-for-8 with three stolen bases in a pair of playoff games on Aug. 5-6.

Tatum, who will enter his fifth and final season as a Bulldog next spring, appeared this summer for the Crabs as both a position player and a pitcher. The Clovis native played in 46 games for the Crabs leading the team in hits (66), doubles (20), triples (3) and RBIs (52) and finished second in batting average (.361) and runs (45).
On the mound, Tatum tossed 6.2 innings appearing in three games picking up a win on June 6 against Seals Baseball tossing four shutout innings with five strikeouts.
The Clovis native went on a 16-game hitting streak from June 22-July 13 and after a hitless game on July 14, followed it up with a 10-game hitting streak from July 15- 29.
The Crabs finished the season 37-10 overall as Tatum finished the summer with 20 multi-hit games, including a season-high six against the Redding Colt 45's on June 14.
Ryan Sullivan, Pitcher, Humboldt Crabs (Far West League)
Sullivan, who will enter his redshirt junior season this fall, joined Tatum on the Crabs this summer and tossed 19.1 innings in 13 appearances on the mound while striking out 14.
The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native threw a summer-high two innings in six games and had two perfect outings in his final two appearances of the summer on Aug. 3 and Aug. 5.
Isaiah Davis, Pitcher, Eau Claire Express (Northwoods League)
Davis, a junior this fall, appeared in 13 games on the mound in relief for the Eau Claire Express posting a 1-4 mark with a 4.78 ERA. The Rialto, Calif., native tossed 26.1 innings limiting opponents to 28 hits, 14 earned runs while striking out 23.
Davis picked up his first win on July 14 with four shutout innings in relief striking out an impressive eight batters in a 12-5 win over Waterloo. He also struck out four on July 31 in a 6-5 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats allowing three hits, one run while striking out four.
In his final outing of the summer on Aug. 9, Davis tossed a summer-high 4.2 innings allowing six hits, one earned run while striking out two in a 6-5 loss to Mankato.

A senior in the fall, Pena was one of three Bulldogs who played for the Licking County Settlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League this summer. Pena played in 37 games for the Settlers hitting .208 from the plate with 27 hits to go along with a home run, 10 runs scored and 11 RBIs.
The Woodlake, Calif., native, who transferred to Fresno State from Fresno City College in 2017, had a summer-high three hits on June 21 against the Galion Graders going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a walk and hit his first home run of the season on July 11 against the Hamilton Joes.
The Settlers finished the season 9-33 with Pena collecting hits in five of his final seven games of the summer and he also got in a pitching appearance tossing 1.2 innings on July 28 striking out a pair of batters.

After appearing in 48 games and smacking eight home runs as a freshman this spring, Presno was one of three 'Dogs on the Anchorage Glacier Pilots this summer.
The Clovis native appeared in 24 games this summer recording 15 hits, two doubles. three home runs, seven runs scored and 13 RBIs. The Buchanan High School graduate had four multi-hit games, including two of the final four games finishing with two hits apiece in both games.
In the regular season finale on July 30 against the Chugiak Chinooks, Presno went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in a 5-4 loss. Presno also saw action on the mound in four games throwing 3.2 innings only allowing two hits while striking out one.

Nogales appeared in 25 games for the Pilots this summer finishing with seven hits scoring two runs and driving in three RBIs while drawing 19 walks, third-most on the team.
Much like Presno, Nogales also made one pitching appearance on July 29 tossing one inning allowing a solo home run in a 2-0 loss.
JT Arruda, Infielder, Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
After starting all 54 games at third base as a redshirt freshman this spring, Arruda joined Nogales and Presno in the Alaska Baseball League with the Glacier Pilots appearing in 40 games this summer.
The Clovis native was named an Alaska Baseball League All-Star and played in the ABL All-Star Game on July 15. In addition, Arruda earned First-Team All-Alaska Baseball League honors finishing third on the team in batting average (.299), while leading the team in hits (44), runs (34) and stolen bases (17).
Arruda finished the summer with 15 multi-hit games and went for a summer-high three base hits on July 8 in a 12-4 win over the Chinooks. Another Bulldog who also saw time on the mound, the Buchanan High School graduate made four relief appearances throwing 4.2 innings and picked up a win in his first outing on July 9 against the Matsu Miners.

Chastain, a senior outfielder this fall for the Bulldogs, appeared in 23 games for the Blues this summer with 14 hits smacking a double and two triples to go along with five RBIs, 10 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
On July 3 against the Arroyo Seco Saints, Chastain went 2-for-4 with a run scored in a 5-2 loss as the Blues finished the summer with a 26-18 overall record.
Dylan Johnson, Outfielder, Dodge City A's (Jayhawk League)
After redshirting this spring for the 'Dogs, Johnson appeared in 30 games for the A's of the Jayhawk League this summer hitting .289 from the plate with 22 hits smacking two doubles, a triple, drove in 10 RBIs and scored 13 runs.
The Blythe, Calif., native has a hit in 17 games this summer and went for a summer-high three hits on July 2 against Hays with three singles in a 15-5 loss. The A's concluded the regular season 26-15 and were runner-ups in the Jayhawk League and went 2-1 in the NBC World Series Championship ending the season with a 5-2 win over Lonestar Baseball on Aug. 7.
Isaiah Haddad, Infielder, Dodge City A's (Jayhawk League)
Another redshirt this past spring, Haddad, a Fresno native, played in 26 games for Dodge City this summer with nine hits, one double, one home run, eight runs scored and finished with 10 stolen bases & 10 RBIs.
In a 11-1 win over Fort Collins on July 12, Haddad went 2-for-4 with a single and home run.
Robbie Peters, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
The final redshirt for the 'Dogs playing this summer, Peters, is joined by three Bulldog teammates on the Crystal Lake Cardinals in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League.
In 20 appearances on the mound, Peters went 0-3 with three saves in 22 innings of work striking out 22. The Tulsa, Okla., native recorded at least one strikeout in 13 appearances and twice notched three strikeouts in a pair of games. Peters picked up a save on July 23 with two innings of work.
The Cardinals finished the summer with a 33-15 overall record and concluded the regular season on July 28 with a 5-3 victory over Hammond.
Tiegen Jones, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
A redshirt sophomore in the fall, Jones pitched in nine games for the Cardinals this summer posting a 5-3 record with a 3.32 ERA. The Sacramento native was one of four pitchers to make a team-high seven starts and Jones threw a team-high 628 pitches this summer.
In 38 innings of action, Jones finished fourth on the team with 28 strikeouts while only allowing nine walks. Jones' final start of the summer, on July 22 against the Northern Knights, was his strongest of the summer as he went a summer-best seven innings allowing five hits, one earned run while striking out four in a complete game effort.
Nolan Dempsey, Infielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
A senior in the fall, Dempsey played in 41 games in the infield for the Cardinals this summer hitting an outstanding .423 from the plate leading the team in hits (60), runs (37), doubles (20) and stolen bases (19).
The junior college transfer from San Mateo, Calif., native, who played in 46 games for the 'Dogs this spring, aalso drove in 21 RBIs and smacked three home runs on his way to earning Metro League All-Star honors.
Dempsey finished with 18 multi-hit games this summer, including three four-hit performances to go along with five three-hit outings.
Miles Tomczak, Outfielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
The final 'Dog on the Cardinals this summer is sophomore-to-be Tomczak who put together a great summer from the plate and joined Dempsey as a Metro League All-Star.
Playing all 48 games, the Ione, Calif., native hit .360 to rank fourth on the team with those over 37 at-bats while ranking second on the team behind Dempsey with 58 hits and 19 doubles.
Tomczak also racked up 16 multi-hit games, including three four-hit performances, scored a season-high four runs on June 18 and had 12 multi-RBI contest, including a summer-high six against the Kane County Phantoms on June 23.
