FRESNO, Calif. – Head coach Ric Mortera and the Fresno State women's tennis team announced the schedule for the upcoming spring 2019 season, highlighted by 12 home matches, on Thursday. This announcement comes on the verge of the Bulldogs' first action, as they will head to Berkeley, Calif., to compete in the Cal Winter Invitational on Friday and continue play throughout the weekend.
The reigning Mountain West champions will open the season with back-to-back tournaments, beginning with the Cal Winter Invitational on Jan. 11-13 in Berkeley, Calif., at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. The 'Dogs will square off against the likes of Cal, St. Mary's and Cal Poly beginning at 10 a.m. each day. Fans can follow along the live stream provided by Cal here and check the Bulldog twitter page @FresnoStateWTEN for result updates.
Fresno State will follow up by heading to Fullerton, Calif., to compete in the Cal State Fullerton Spring Invite Jan. 18-21 at the Titan Courts. The final regular season tournament for the Bulldogs will be the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, held Feb. 22-24 at Lagoon Park and the O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. There, the 'Dogs will have a chance to take on some of the top ranked programs in the country such as No. 21 Illinois, No. 25 Auburn, No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 9 Oklahoma State, among others.
Outside of tournament play, Fresno State will compete in 18 dual matches, with six on the road and 12 at home in the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs' first dual match will also be the home opener as they take on Stanislaus State on Jan. 25, followed by another home contest against Pacific on Jan. 27.
Fresno State will next take a four-game road trip, first heading to Eugene, Ore., to take on Saint Mary's on Feb. 2 and Oregon on Feb. 3. The 'Dogs will then head to San Francisco, Calif., on Feb. 9 to take on the University of San Francisco and wrap up the road trip at Santa Clara on Feb. 10.
The Bulldogs will head back home to host BYU on Feb. 15, then make their way to the Blue-Gray. Following that, Fresno State will host five straight home matches. The stretch will begin with a doubleheader against Fresno City College on March 2, then continue with dual matches against Utah on March 12, Washington State on March 13 and Northern Arizona on March 15.
The 'Dogs will have a week off before making their final regular-season road trip, in which they will take on San Diego State on March 29 and at UNLV on March 31 at each of their respective home courts.
Fresno State will conclude the regular season with a four-game home stand, hosting Cal Poly on April 5 and Long Beach State on April 7, then finishing with conference opponents San Jose State on April 12 and Nevada on April 14.
As for the postseason, the Bulldogs will compete in the Mountain West Championships April 25-28 in San Diego, Calif. Should they repeat as conference champions, the 'Dogs would compete in regionals for the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament as in past seasons. A new adjustment to the postseason format this season is the addition of a super regional, where the 16 remaining teams following the first two rounds play a single match at campus sites to determine the final eight teams that advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 16-25 in Orlando, Fla.
After going 3-1 in conference play and running through the tournament last season, the 'Dogs will look to replicate that success, but with a new foundation with Mortera at the helm and six true freshman rounding out the squad of eight total players.
