Fresno State senior guard Deshon Taylor scored a game-high 24 points in the Bulldogs’ 74-65 loss at Colorado State on Saturday. The ’Dogs will next play at Wyoming on Wednesday before returning for a two-game homestand, which starts with New Mexico on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. PT.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team suffered its first road loss since November when the Bulldogs' second-half rally came up short in falling 74-65 to the Colorado State Rams on Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.
Â
Fresno State (14-5, 5-2 Mountain West) did a great job on the offensive glass against Colorado State (8-12, 3-4 MW) with the Bulldogs owning an 11-7 advantage in offensive rebounds and outscoring the Rams 23-4 in second chance points.
Â
But CSU took advantage in transition, from the perimeter and free throw line to neutralize the Bulldogs' strengths enough before slowing up the pace down the stretch.
Â
Fresno State senior guard Deshon Taylor scored a game-high 24 points with seven assists and six rebounds, while making five 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who shot just 35.9 percent from the field for the game. Nate Grimes posted his fifth double-double in MW play (ninth of his career) with 16 points and 12 rebounds against the Rams, and Braxton Huggins added 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Bulldogs' defense limited CSU forward Nico Carvacho to just nine points for the game. The Rams were led offensively by J.D. Paige, who had 17 points.
How it happened: Taylor made two 3-pointers to open the game and give the Bulldogs an early 6-0 lead before the Rams answered with a 12-0 run with four 3-pointers of their own to take the lead for good.
Â
CSU led by as many as seven points on two occasions in the first half and the Rams were up 33-30 at halftime.
Â
Colorado State started the second half on a 13-0 run to extend its lead to 46-30, and later found itself ahead by 18 twice – the latest coming after a 3-pointer by Paige midway through the second half.
Â
But the 'Dogs continued to attack and used a 23-9 run to cut the Rams' lead to 67-63 with 1:10 remaining on a Grimes dunk and free throw. That was as close as Fresno State would come as New Williams fouled out on the ensuing possession and CSU sealed it at the charity stripe in the waning seconds.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
On Colorado State's strong starts in the first and second halves…
"That part was tough, but hats off to them. They came out at the start of the game and at the start of the second half and took it to us and took too big of a lead for us to overcome. We didn't get a lot of production, but we still had a chance. We had a chance to make it a one possession game."
Â
Deshon Taylor, Fresno State senior guard
On the Bulldogs' offensive execution…
"We just missed a lot of open shots. We were 8 of 30 from three. We don't usually shoot it like that. We had 12 turnovers - we try to limit ourselves to nine. That didn't help. It was just too many missed shots. We had a lot of open shots – we just didn't make them."
Â
On what he told his teammates at halftime…
"I told them at halftime to stay confident - shots would fall - and we had to get back in transition D. We were confident in our shots. They just didn't fall."
Player Notes:
Deshon Taylor - 24 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals
