Bulldogs drop tough battle at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. -Â The Fresno State volleyball team dropped a tough, back-and-forth battle on Saturday afternoon at Wyoming in straight sets at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Fresno State (10-8, 3-3 MW) dropped sets, 25-14, 28-26 and 27-25 as the Bulldogs let leads slip away in both the second and third sets.
Leading the way offensively was freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley who finished with a season-high 10 kills while hitting .192 and added two block assists and a dig. Junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov added nine kills and nine digs as she came just one kill and one dig shy of her 10th double-double of the season.
Senior setter Madelyn Halteman tallied 27 assists as she moved past 3,500 career assists in the contest while junior libero Reagan Leonard added 19 digs for her ninth straight match with double-digit digs.
Wyoming (10-7, 5-1 MW) outhit the Bulldogs, .197 to .074, and finished with the advantage in kills, assists and blocks.
How It Happened
The opening set of the match saw the 'Dogs and Cowgirls jump out to a 5-5 tie on a service ace by freshman middle blocker Grace Doyle (watch). A 5-0 Wyoming run pushed the Cowgirls in front 10-5 and after the 'Dogs cut the home team's lead down to three at 11-8 on a kill by Lauren Sabbatini, another 5-0 run pushed Wyoming ahead 16-8. A kill and ace by Sukhov brought the Bulldogs within 20-12, but Wyoming scored five of the final seven points for a 25-14 win.
The second set saw Fresno State open up a 4-2 lead after a kill by Sukhov (watch) and lead by 13-7 after a Cowgirl service error. A 3-0 run by Wyoming brought the Cowgirls to within three before another kill by Sukhov (watch), her sixth of the match, put the 'Dogs ahead 14-10. The Bulldogs continued to lead 19-14 getting a kill by Kelley (watch) and after a kill by junior outside hitter Amilya Thompson put the 'Dogs up 22-17, a 5-0 run by Wyoming locked up the set at 22-22. With the teams trading the next eight points to make the set 26 apiece, kills by the Cowgirls' Jackie McBride and Faith Waitsman sealed the second set win for Wyoming.
The third set again saw the 'Dogs jump out an early lead taking a 7-3 advantage after a kill by Thompson (watch) and extend it to 14-6 (watch) after a Cowgirl attack error. A kill by Kelley made it 15-7 in favor of the 'Dogs, but a 10-0 run by Wyoming pushed the Cowgirls in front 17-15. Wyoming took advantage of three services aces and four Bulldog attack errors in that pivotal scoring run. Two points for the Bulldogs locked up the set at 17-17 and the teams kept pace with one another at 20-20 and traded points to lock up the set at 22, 23 and 24. A kill by Kelley put the 'Dogs on the brink of the set win at 25-24, but three straight kills by Cowgirls sealed the sweep for Wyoming.

The 'Dogs return home to host San Diego State (9-8, 2-4 MW) on Monday evening at the Save Mart Center at 6 p.m. for High School Night. All high school students with a valid ID get into the match for free.

- Fresno State falls to 2-4 at Wyoming since moving to the Mountain West in 2012.
- It is the 'Dogs first three-match losing streak since Oct. 28 - Nov. 3, 2017 when the Bulldogs dropped five straight matches.
- The 'Dogs fall to 1-2 on the road in the MW and 2-4 on the road this season.
- Fresno State falls to 2-6Â when losing the first set.
- It was only the fourth time the Bulldogs have been swept this season and only the eighth time under head coach Jonathan Winder.
- Kelley's previous high number of kills was nine against No. 15 Colorado State on Oct. 10.
