RENO, Nev. – The Fresno State swimming and diving team fell to Nevada 179-102 in its first dual meet of the season. The Wolf Pack sealed in its victory taking first place in 12 out of the 15 events.
"We learned a lot today," head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "It is hard to go up to altitude and swim. We can learn and get better as this is our first dual meet of the year. We have a lot of work to get before the end of the season. The divers did great, and got our first win against Nevada in diving in a long time. We had some outstanding swims with Kimberly Harbert and Athlena Clayson winning the 200 fly and 200 back as well as Manuela getting second in both the 400 I'm and 200 breast."
Fresno State falls to 0-1 (0-1 MW) on the season.
The dual was highlighted by freshman Athena Clayson finishing first in the 200 backstroke (2:03.43) and senior Irina Nikolaeva taking first place in the 1-meter with a score of 303.00.
Fresno State came away with six second place finishes. Clayson logged a time of 27. 73 in the 100 backstroke, Kimberly Harbert recorded a 57.61 in the 100 butterfly and a 2:07.15 in the 200 butterfly, Manuela Mendolicchio chalked a 4:32.64 in the 400 IM, Darina Kihisiamova recorded a 5:11.54 finish in the 500 freestyle and the Bulldog 400 freestyle relay team logged a 3:35.06.
Nevada was able to extend its lead by taking the top two spots in five events in the dual.
