LAS VEGAS - Despite winning the opening set, the Fresno State volleyball team fell in four sets at UNLV on Thursday evening at Cox Pavilion.
Fresno State (12-11, 5-6 MW) won the opening set, 25-22, but UNLV (13-9, 9-2 MW) claimed the next three sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14.
Leading the team in kills for the third time this season, freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley had a team-high 12 kills to go along with a season-high six digs, two block assists and a service ace.
Junior Amilya Thompson had her second consecutive double-double finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Fifth-year senior setter Madelyn Halteman tallied 25 assists and 11 digs.
How It Happened
Much like the first time these two teams met earlier this season, the 'Dogs and Rebels were evenly matched in the early going and that was on display in the opening set. The Bulldogs took an early 8-7 lead after a Rebel attack error and tied it at 10-10 on a service ace by Halteman.
A 5-1 run by UNLV put the Rebels up by four and the home team stayed in the lead before a late run by the 'Dogs tied up the set at 21-21 on a kill by Rebecca Rendahl and an attack error by the Rebels. With the teams trading the next two points, Fresno State picked up the final three points of the set after a kill by Thompson, an attack error by UNLV and a service ace by redshirt freshman setter Julia Handy for a 25-22 win.
The second set saw the Rebels storm out of the gate for a 14-8 lead and keep a six-point lead at 18-12 to force a Bulldog timeout. Out of the short break, the 'Dogs responded with a 7-3 run getting to within 21-19 after an ace by Thompson. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Bulldogs would get as UNLV responded with four of the final six points fo the set for a 25-21 win.
The third set saw the teams trade points in the early going before a kill by Handy made it 13-12. A service error by the Rebels kept the 'Dogs within one at 15-14, but the Rebels closed out the set with a 10-4 run to win 25-18 as the 'Dogs were limited to a -.030 hitting percentage.
The fourth set saw the 'Dogs jump out to a 7-5 lead after a kill by Thompson, but a 5-0 run by the Rebels put UNLV up by three forcing a Bulldog timeout. It was all UNLV from there as the Rebels went on a 11-3 run to open a 21-10 lead and move on to a 25-14 set win.
Notes
The 'Dogs are back in action on Saturday traveling to New Mexico (6-17, 1-10 MW) at 12 p.m. PT in Albuquerque. The Lobos fell in four sets at home to San Diego State on Thursday evening.
