Fresno State freshman Jarred Hyder had 23 points and eight rebounds in a 72-66 overtime road loss at San Diego. The Bulldogs return home to face CSUSB on Sunday at 2 p.m. PT.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's basketball team erased a 13-point second half deficit before falling 72-66 in overtime to the San Diego Toreros on Tuesday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The road loss was the second this season for Fresno State (1-2), which also saw a rally come up short in losing 71-57 at then No. 15/14 Oregon a week ago.
Fresno State freshman Jarred Hyder scored a game-high 23 points with eight rebounds and four assists for the Bulldogs. Freshman Orlando Robinson had 12 points and 10 rebounds for first career double-double at the Division I level and senior Nate Grimes added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the nonconference contest.
The Bulldogs next host CSUSB at the Save Mart Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. PT.
How it happened: Fresno State jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in the first six minutes of the contest, only to have USD answer with a 15-2 run to take a 19-14 lead on one of Joey Calcaterra's two 3-pointers for the Toreros.
San Diego worked its way to an 11-point advantage at 34-23 with two minutes remaining until halftime, but the Bulldogs scored the final five points of the half to climb within 34-28 at the break.
Grimes was whistled for an offensive foul on a strong power move to the basket on the first possession of the second half, which could have cut the deficit to four.
Instead, the Toreros scored eight of the initial nine points of the second session to surge in front of the Bulldogs 42-29 for their largest lead of the game. During that stretch, Fresno State sophomore Aguir Agau picked up his first three personal fouls on three separate plays over the course of a mere 22 seconds (16:48 to 16:26).
Hyder scored the first seven points of a 9-0 run by Fresno State to climb right back in it midway through the second half. And despite the struggles and challenges, including Agau fouling out with 5:31 left in the second half, the Bulldogs tied the score at 53-53 with 2:26 left in regulation on a pair of Robinson free throws.
USD's Braun Hartfield made a jump shot and Hyder answered on the ensuing possessions. The squads combined to miss the final three shot attempts before overtime, including two potential go-ahead shots at the basket by Hyder in the final minute.
The Toreros held off the Bulldogs' comeback bid in overtime with USD outscoring Fresno State 17-11 in the extra period.
Fresno State and San Diego each shot worse than 40 percent from the field, with the Bulldogs making just six of their 30 perimeter shots (20.0 percent) from beyond the 3-point line. Fresno State also lost the turnover battle 18-14 and had just 11 assists on 23 made field goals. USD had 17 assists on its 24 made shots. Calcaterra had a team-best 21 points for the Toreros.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
On his team erasing a 13-point second half deficit to force overtime…
"I was proud of their effort, coming back in the second half. We just didn't play good. It's that simple. We can break it down more of making shots, turning the ball over, defensive breakdowns, not flowing in the offense, but we just didn't play good. That's going to happen sometimes with a young, inexperienced team, but it needs to happen less."
On his takeaways to get better…
"We'll learn from this and we'll continue to get better, but when you're subbing in a freshman for a sophomore ... there's no question that they're working hard and they're going to get better. We're excited about our team. We're excited about the win the other night (against Winthrop, who beat Saint Mary's last night) and we're disappointed about the loss tonight. But you can't rush youth. Our seniors have to play better.
On how he wants his team to play…
"Be consistent with your energy and your effort. Play to your strength and show up every night. You win with men and you have to bring it every night. The shots are not always going to fall - that's part of it. But rebounding the ball, being consistent, helping your team ... what else can you do to help the team on the floor when your shot is not falling?
On what he likes the most about freshman Jarred Hyder, who had a game-high 23 points…
"His grit. That's where it starts. It starts with your grit and that's what you're looking for from everybody on the floor. Basketball character. Bring it every day, move on to the next play, stay aggressive and play as a team. You can control your attitude and your effort. Jarred is going to have some good days and some bad days, but he definitely has basketball character that way."
