MISSOULA, Mont. – Behind a 30-0 edge from beyond the 3-point line, Fresno State left Dahlberg Arena on Friday night with a 76-63 win over Montana. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 on the season, their best start since the 2008-09 season.
Scoring just six points through two games, Aly Gamez broke out of her scoring funk with a team-high 15 points, knocking down 3-of-5 from 3. The junior also paced the 'Dogs in rebounds with eight and assists with five in 29 minutes of action. Hanna Cavinder chipped in 14 points and Maddi Utti added 13.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened the game working the ball inside to score the first six points of the night. The Bulldogs built their lead up to 11-4 midway through the quarter. Montana grabbed their first lead of the game with 2:51 on the clock through an 8-0 run to go up 12-11. The game remained tight throughout the next eight minutes. Leading by two with 4:35 on the clock in the second, Gamez dropped in her first 3-pointer of the season. Despite the Lady Griz getting a bucket back at the other end, the 'Dogs finished the half on an 8-2 spurt to take a 37-28 advantage at the half.
Mckenzie Johnston brought the Lady Griz back to within four, scoring all seven points in a 7-2 run to start the third quarter. Montana pulled to as close as four but a 3-pointer from Jordanna Porter with 4:27 on the clock pushed the lead back to seven for the 'Dogs. With the advantage standing at six two minutes later, Gamez drained back-to-back triples and Porter followed up with one of her own as the Bulldogs opened things up with an 11-0 run. The two-minute stretch gave Fresno State a comfortable 57-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With the advantage being maintained through the first four minutes of the period, the 'Dogs hit an 8-0 run, with the last four coming from Hanna Cavinder, as the lead ballooned to 23 at 74-51 with 4:18 left to play. Turnovers would strike the 'Dogs late though and the Lady Griz capitalized with a 10 unanswered but Fresno State kept the Montana at bay during the final minutes to earn the 13-point win.
