Sutherland rises into tie for 12th

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Fresno State men's golf team finished up its fall tournament slate with an eighth-place finish at the stacked 2019 Saint Mary's Invitational at a 7,002-yard Poppy Hills Golf Club this week.

Fresno State freshman Matthew Sutherland delivered his best performance of the fall with a tie for 12th in the individual competition, which saw 100 players start the week (97 finished).

Sutherland posted back-to-back rounds in the sixties with a 69 on Tuesday and a 68 on Wednesday to surge up the leaderboard to 3-under-par – just eight strokes back individual champion Peter Kuest from BYU at 11-under-par.

The Bulldogs' Tommy Stephenson also had a strong showing at 1-under-par to tie for 22nd in the competitive field.

Fresno State will begin their spring schedule in February at the University of Wyoming Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif.
