Fresno State senior guard New Williams scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 31-point win over IUPUI. The Bulldogs next host San Francisco on Monday at 7 p.m. PT.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's basketball team defeated the IUPUI Jaguars 95-64 on Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
The 31-point win for Fresno State (4-7) came in the Bulldogs' third of a stretch of seven straight games in the state of California.
Fresno State senior guard New Williams finished with 24 points, including tying a career-high with six 3-pointers (on 11 attempts), on 9-for-15 shooting from the field. Williams also tied a career-high with five steals and has two assists with no turnovers.
Freshman guard Niven Hart added 16 points and six rebounds, and junior guard Mustafa Lawrence dished out a career-high nine assists (one turnover) for the Bulldogs.
IUPUI (4-9) was led by Grant Weatherford, who had 16 points for the Jaguars.
How it happened: Fresno State executed early and often against IUPUI, especially with the Bulldogs bringing high energy on defense and making shots on the offensive end.
Fresno State used a 23-3 run midway through the first half to pull away from the Jaguars in a game the Bulldogs led for 37 of the 40-minute contest, which saw Fresno State lead by at least 30 for nearly the final 15 minutes.
As a team, Fresno State converted a season-high 15 3-pointers and also had a season-best 21 assists on 32 made field goals. The Bulldogs went 16-for-17 at the free throw line, and outrebounded the Jaguars by 19 (46-to-27).
The Bulldogs' defense forced 11 steals and Nate Grimes had another emphatic block – the 108th of his career.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
"Something we talked about was turnovers and rebounds. We talk about it every game, but this was a very good rebounding team. That was a huge emphasis for us. Turnovers, for us, a lot of times they're self-forced, so we talked about making the easy play and I thought we did that for the most part."
On New Williams and thriving in the last two weeks after having a back injury earlier in the season…
"New is a good shooter. Those injuries kind of put him back a little bit. It's hard to find a rhythm. I think he's starting to find a rhythm so we're going to expect more consistency from New."
New Williams, Fresno State senior guard
"Coach (Hutson) has a lot of confidence in me and my teammates have a lot of confidence in me. So when I'm comfortable out there on the floor and I'm just playing free and playing my game, it just feels natural."
Player Notes:
New Williams – 24 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 steals
