'Dogs fall 90-66 at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In their last game before the holiday break, Fresno State pulled level with Santa Clara with eight minutes to play, but the Bulldogs were unable to keep pace with the Broncos the rest of the way, falling 90-66 on Saturday afternoon at Leavey Center. SCU shot 10-of-13 from the floor during the final eight minutes of the game.
Maddi Utti registered a game-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds. Haley Cavinder recorded her first double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hanna Cavinder joined the two in double figures with 13 as she shot 9-of-9 from the charity stripe, but four Santa Clara starters finished with at least 15 points.
How It Happened
Close through much of the first quarter, Fresno State twice took the lead on 3-pointers from Haley Cavinder and Bree Delaney. Tamia Braggs though scored 10 points in the period and kept the Broncos ahead by one, 21-20, after 10 minutes. The game remained close midway through the second with Fresno State leading 24-23 with 6:41 on the clock following a pair of free throws from Hanna Cavinder. The Bulldogs though missed their final six shots of the quarter and turned the ball over four times. The stretch without a bucket turned into an 11-0 run to close the half for Santa Clara as the Broncos took a 36-26.
The Bulldogs found their footing in the third after going down 12 with 7:46 on the clock. Within two minutes, the 'Dogs got back to within three with a 14-5 spurt. With 3:02 remaining, Haley Cavinder knocked in her second 3-pointer of the quarter to pull Fresno State within one at 51-50. The Broncos then answered with a quick five points to extend their lead back to six. Fresno State closed to within two by the end of the third quarter with a pair of trips to free-throw line in the final minutes.
Genna Ogier produced five points early in the fourth for the 'Dogs, the second bucket, a 3-pointer from the top of the key knotted up the game at 63-63 with 8:04 on the clock. From that point, the Bulldogs' shooting went cold but Santa Clara's offense picked up as the Broncos knocked down 10 of their final 13 shots as they ended the game on a 27-3 run.
