Bulldogs split opening day at Hawaii Paradise Classic

HONOLULU – After an 8-2 loss against No. 2/1 UCLA in the season opener, Fresno State grinded out a 5-4 win in nine innings against UT Arlington to earn a split on the first day of the Hawaii Paradise Classic on Thursday.

Hayleigh Galvan hit 3-for-6 with two RBIs over the two games, including a game-tying double with two out in the seventh vs. UT Arlington to force extra innings. Rachel Minogue homered vs. UCLA and had a hit vs. UT Arlington as well while scoring two runs.

In her Bulldog debut, sophomore Hailey Dolcini combined to allow just three runs over eight innings pitched, permitting just two runs over five innings after starting the night cap. Danielle East was the pitcher of record in both Fresno State games, earning the win after throwing the last three innings against UT Arlington and allowing just one hit and one unearned run.

How it Happened – vs. No. 2/1 UCLA
East started the opener and issued a walk but nothing more in the top of the first, and in the bottom half the 'Dogs got the first two on board but a double play ball got the Bruins out of the inning. Leading off the second, Taylor Pack went deep to right center to give UCLA the lead. The Bruins got two more aboard on an error and a walk and went ahead 2-0 on an RBI single. McKenzie Wilson would then take away a home run from Kinsley Washington jumping above the wall in right, but the ball popped out of her glove on the way down to go as an RBI double. In all UCLA went on to total six runs on five hits, two walks, and an error in the inning.

The Bruins added a seventh run in the third inning as they pushed across a two-out run with three singles. Dolcini recorded a scoreless top of the fourth inning and freshman Danielle Lung put up a zero in the top of the fifth. Kelcey Carrasco got the first Bulldog hit of the season with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth but the runner would be stranded at third.

UCLA added a run with a two-out RBI single by Pack in the sixth to go ahead 8-0. Down to their last out in the bottom of the sixth, the 'Dogs got a single by Galvan and Minogue followed with a 2-run shot to right center to extend the game. Lung got the Bruins three up, three down in the top of the 7th but Fresno State was retired in order in the bottom half as UCLA completed the win.

Fresno State took an early lead in game two as Wilson was hit by a pitch with one away and Galvan followed with a long single down the left field line to push across a run. The score remained the same into the top of the fourth inning when Minogue singled and Carrasco was hit by a pitch to put runners on second and third and freshman Vanessa M. Hernandez banged a double off the left field wall to bring in a run and double the Bulldog lead with her first collegiate hit.

UT Arlington threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with a double, a walk, and a single, but Dolcini got a fly out to left field to strand all three runners. The Bulldogs left runners on the corners in the top of the fifth, and in the bottom half the Mavericks had consecutive bunt singles with one away, the runners advanced with a double steal with two out, and Aileen Garcia delivered a two-run single to tie the game.

Fresno State left a runner at second in the top of the sixth. UT Arlington had a leadoff walk in the bottom half and two sac bunts moved the runner to third before Laura Curry hit a groundball to the left side that went off the glove of a diving Schuylar Broussard to bring in the go-ahead run.

With Fresno State down to its final out in the top of the seventh, Wilson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Down to her last strike, Galvan lifted a fly ball to deep right center that went off the glove of the right fielder Kayci Moore for an RBI double to tie the game. East came in to pitch and retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas was placed at second to start the eighth inning and consecutive wild pitches from UT Arlington's JoJo Valencia allowed Cuevas to reach third and then score the go-ahead run. The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth with a hit and a Bulldog error and, with two away, scored the tying run on a wild pitch. East got a groundout to follow and strand the potential winning run at third.

Fresno State went back on top in the 9th as Kaitlyn Jennings got to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground ball and a throwing error by the UT Arlington third baseman. The Mavericks got their runner to third on sac bunt in the bottom of the ninth but East got a fly out to center and a strong throw from Vanessa Hernandez kept the runner at third. East then got Reagan Wright to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

- Fresno State has won at least one of its first two games of the season every year since 2007.
- Minogue hit just three home runs last season but two of the three came in the final series of the season at Nevada as she has now homered in three of her lasts five games overall.
- The Bulldogs used three pitchers in each game on Thursday, with Lung allowing just three hits and two runs over four combined innings in her collegiate debut.
- Fresno State batters totaled three hit-by-pitches on Thursday after the 'Dogs ranked second in NCAA Div. I with 71 hit-by-pitches last season to shatter the MW record.
