Nikolaeva strong on 3-meter to open NCAA Zone Diving

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Fresno State junior diver Irina Nikolaeva had a strong showing on 3-meter and just missed qualifying for the final on the first day of the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. on the campus of Northern Arizona University.

In a field of 57 of the best divers on the west coast, including Utah and all California and Arizona Pac-12 schools, Nikolaeva scored 259.95 to place 22nd in the preliminary round. She just missed qualifying for the final as the top 18 divers moved on to the final round.

Nikolaeva topped 44.50 points in four of her six dives, with her best score a 51.00 on her third dive. She improved from a 29th-place finish at the 2018 Zone Meet in which she scored 248.30 on 3-meter.

Nikolaeva will represent the Bulldogs again on Tuesday as she takes part in the 1-meter competition, with prelims beginning at 11:30 a.m. and finals at 3:10 p.m.
