LAS VEGAS – Despite pulling as close as one early in the fourth quarter, Fresno State was unable to overcome the hot-shooting from 3-point range by Boise State, falling 89-77 on Tuesday night at Thomas & Mack Center in the semifinals of the Mountain West Championship.
Boise State knocked down 12 3-pointers (44.4 percent) in the game with six coming from senior Marta Hermida who led the Broncos with 30 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. She led a group of four Broncos with double figures.
Fresno State was led by senior Candice White who posted 28 points on 9-of-20 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Aly Gamez chipped in 18 points and Maddi Utti added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened the game with an early 4-1 lead but with three 3-pointers from three different players in the first four minutes. There still was not much separation as the Bulldogs had answers from inside in the arc and trailed 16-12 with under four minutes to play in the quarter. A layup from Utti and a pair from Gamez leveled the game at 18-18 a minute later. Hermida would create some separation though, knocking down a pair of 3's in the final minute to push the BSU ahead 24-18 after one.
The Broncos continued to lead throughout the second but Fresno State would not go away. A 9-2 run early with seven coming from White pulled the 'Dogs with one at 28-27 just over three minutes in. Two minutes later, a 3-pointer from Breanne Knishka tied the game at 34-34. With neither time scoring for nearly three minutes to end the half, White drive hard into the lane to tie the game at 36-36 and the Bulldogs defense held to keep the game knotted up after two.
The sides traded early buckets but then the 3's started coming in bunches for the Broncos. Back-to-back from Hermida and Braydey Hodgins pushed their lead to six. The Bulldogs would pull back to within with 5:23 on the clock. The Broncos would then hit three treys in a row, with two from Hermida, to extend their lead to their largest of the game at 55-43 to force a Bulldog timeout with 3:45 remaining in the quarter. The lead would hover around double digits but an and-one from Utti and a layup from Katelin Noyer to end quarter brought the 'Dogs back to within five at 60-54.
White opened the fourth quarter but Riley Lupfer answered with one of her own for Boise State. The 'Dogs got back to within one through layup from Gamez and and-one from White but that was as close as they get as Fresno State's shooting cooled off. After White missed a jumper to take the lead, Boise State would go on a 12-3 to all but put the game away as the 'Dogs would get no closer than seven after a 3-pointer from White with 35 seconds.
