SAN JOSE, Calif. – In a game that saw multiple double-digit runs, San Jose got the last bit of separation to top Fresno State 65-57 in the final game of the regular season on Thursday night at The Event Center.
Â
Fresno State shot below 40 percent for the second straight game, shooting just 32.9 percent on the night (24-of-73) compared to SJSU's 39 percent (23-of-59). Maddi Utti collected her seventh double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Gabby Standifer knocked down a season-high four 3-pointers on 4-of-9 shooting for 12 points. Â Â Â
Â
How It Happened
Behind a string of back-to-back 3-pointers from Bree Delaney and a pair of free throws from Utti, Fresno State raced out to an early 8-2 three minutes into the game. The Bulldogs though would miss the next 10 shots as the Spartans would close the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 15-0 lead after one.
Â
The string of missed shots for the Bulldogs continued into the second, missing their first six to open the quarter as the Spartans built their lead up to 12 at 22-10. Gabby Standifer changed that and ended the streak of 16 straight missed shots as the freshman knocked down a triple. San Jose State answered at the other end but the Standifer 3 would ignite the Bulldogs as they would hit seven of nine shots within a four-minute stretch. Fresno State would trail 29-27 at the half.
Â
San Jose State would build their lead back up to as much as seven at 42-35 in the third following an and-1 from Analyss Benally but Utti answered with back-to-back layups. Danae Marquez would push the lead back to six but in the final seconds of the quarter, Kristina Cavey produced a steal and took it the length of the floor before hitting a jump at the buzzer to pull the Bulldogs to within four at 45-41 after the third quarter.
Â
The Spartans would extend their lead back up to eight midway through the fourth period but the Bulldogs would have an answer through a 6-0 run. Back-to-back jumpers Candice White pulled the 'Dogs 54-52 with 3:08 on the clock. SJSU quickly answered though. A 3-pointer from Benally made it a five-point game. Fresno State then turned it over on its next possession to lead to a fast-break layup and a 59-52 for the Spartans. Fresno State would only get to as close as five the rest of the way before falling 65-57.
