SAN DIEGO – The Fresno State women's tennis team attempted to put together a rally after dropping the doubles point to San Jose State on Wednesday, but ultimately fell 4-2 in its first round match at the 2019 Mountain West Tennis Championship hosted at the Aztec Tennis Center. The loss was the second to the eighth-seeded Spartans in the last two weeks.
Â
DOUBLES
Fresno State fell behind early in the match through doubles as the Spartans switched up their pairings from the previous match against the Bulldogs this month. Miyo Kobayashi and Alba Pedrero Galindo opened doubles with a 6-3 win over Deniza Marcinkevica and Ella Husrefovic on Court 2. Tamara Culibrk and Klara Milojkovic then defeated Shir Azran and A.C. Hummel at No. 3, 6-2, to clinch the opening point.
Â
SINGLES
Savannah Sendar then gave San Jose State a 2-0 advantage as the Spartan picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Georgia Lawson on Court 4, turning the tide on the Bulldog after falling to her less than two weeks ago. Azran got the Bulldogs on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Culibrk at No. 1. It was the freshman's second-straight win when playing in the top spot, both coming with identical scores.
Â
Hummel then dropped a 6-4, 6-4 result to Pedrero Galindo on Court 3, the Bulldog's third loss of the spring and second to the Spartan.
Â
With the final three matches heading into third sets, Husrefovic was the first off the courts as she brought Fresno State back within one at 3-2. The freshman rallied back from a one-set deficit with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 result against Milojkovic in the No. 6 spot. With Jennifer Timotin in a back-and-forth match on Court 2 for the Bulldogs, and holding a slim advantage, Marcinkevica was in her own tightly contested match at No. 5. After splitting the first two sets 3-6, 7-5, the Bulldog was unable to string to set wins together, falling 6-4 in the third to Laura Malsert as the Spartans clinched the dual win 4-2.
