IRVING, Texas -Â The Fresno State equestrian team competed in its final season with the United Equestrian Conference this year as Fresno State Director of Athletics Terry Tumey announced on Thursday the program will shift to the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member.
Â
"We are excited for our equestrian program to join the Big 12 Conference," said Tumey. "Aligning ourselves with some of the best equestrian teams in the nation further advances our mission to provide a championship experience for all of our student-athletes and in this case specifically the dedicated young women who comprise our program."
Â
After spending the last five seasons with the United Equestrian Conference, the Bulldogs will make the move to the Big 12, entering as the fourth member of the conference and will compete against league foes Baylor, Oklahoma State and TCU.Â
Â
The affiliate membership is effective immediately for the upcoming 2019-20 academic year. The addition of the Bulldogs to the league will return the Big 12 Conference Equestrian Championships to a playoff style where each of the four teams will compete in semifinal matches for a chance to compete in a championship draw for the Big 12 title.Â
Â
"This is such a great thing to be happening not only for our team, but for Fresno State as well, as it now gives us two schools in the Big 12 which is outstanding." said Fresno State equestrian head coach Eric Hubbard. "This transition will empower us to be a better team, to continually improve and to rise to the level of competition we will see more of in the regular season. The Big 12 teams have proven themselves on the national level and we hope to add to that success and build to be even better. We have always had a strong relationship with the Big 12 teams and we look forward to taking on the challenge to compete against them throughout the regular season as well as at the Big 12 Championships."Â
Â
This season, the Big 12 teams combined for a 23-21 record. Leading the way in the conference in the 2018-19 season was Baylor, who sat steady in the top five in the national rankings with a 9-5 record.
Â
In the final NCEA Farman Team Rankings, announced on April 2, Baylor and Oklahoma State were No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. TCU came in ranked eighth while the Bulldogs followed closely at No. 9.Â
Â
"We are pleased to add Fresno State as an equestrian affiliate member," said Big 12 Senior Associate Commissioner of Championships Dayna Scherf. "The Bulldogs bring a historically successful program that will enhance Big 12 competition. We look forward to welcoming the Bulldogs' coaches, student-athletes and fans to the league."
