Fresno State freshman forward Orlando Robinson scored a game-high 19 points with five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks to lead the Bulldogs to a 65-50 road win at Wyoming.
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Fresno State men's basketball team earned a gritty 65-50 road victory over the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday at Arena-Auditorium.
Â
The win was the fifth for Fresno State (6-12, 2-5 Mountain West) in its last six trips to Laramie, Wyo., and featured an especially stout defensive effort by the Bulldogs.
Â
Jake Hendricks and Kwane Marble each had 12 points for Wyoming (5-15, 0-8 MW), who were held scoreless by the Bulldogs' defense for more than 11 minutes in the middle of the contest.
Fresno State also limited Wyoming's Hunter Maldonado to just seven points - which was the first time all season the redshirt sophomore didn't score in double figures.
Â
How it happened: Fresno State aggressively attacked the basket early, which opened up its offensive arsenal with the Bulldogs using an 11-0 run to take a 25-11 lead over the Cowboys.Â
Â
Later in the game, Fresno State built as much as a 23-point lead over Wyoming. The Bulldogs never trailed for nearly the final 36 of the 40-minute battle.
Â
One key defensive stretch by Fresno State kept Wyoming without a score for just over the last seven minutes of the first half and just over four minutes to start the second half.
Â
Fresno State had led 31-16 at halftime, largely fueled by its defensive execution and performance on the glass.
For the game, the Bulldogs outrebounded the Cowboys 44-30, which included 19 offensive rebounds by Fresno State, who turned those into 21 second-chance points.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
On the Bulldogs' defense, specifically guarding Hunter Maldonado…
"Anthony Holland played on him most of the time. I think the zone confused him a little bit - he missed some shots that he usually makes. But we're proud to come in here and hold them (as a team) to 34 percent (from the field), 31% from three and turn them over 13 times. We were proud of our defense."
On Anthony Holland...
"He fought. Anthony is a competitor and he believes in himself. He fought, and it was a good team effort on helping, too. There were a couple of times where we switched out on him and guys did a great job on him, too."
On Niven Hart…
"He can really score the ball. He was going to get some more time and was earning more time in practice when he went out with a concussion. Now that he's back it just works out well for him. We're going to get him in there and try to get him more time, because he can score the ball and we obviously need that."
Nate Grimes, Fresno State senior forward
On Holland's defensive effort against Maldonado…Â
"(Hunter Maldonado) is a very good player. He can shoot the ball, drive it. But Coach Hut made an emphasis on stopping him and we stopped him a little bit. Anthony played really well against him. Before the game we all got in the huddle and told him, 'It's go time.' You have to prove to coach Hut that you can guard one of the best scorers in the conference."
On being close to putting pieces together…
"No telling, because this team is very unpredictable, but I feel like we're getting there. We'll be there soon."
