The Fresno State women’s tennis team won all six single matches en route to a resilient 6-1 home-opening victory over Southern Utah. The Bulldogs will next host Colorado on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team opened its 2020 campaign with a 6-1 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
The Bulldogs won all six singles matches after falling behind early with the Thunderbirds winning two of the three doubles contests to grab the doubles action.
"First match of the year and at home, it's normal to have some nerves," Fresno State first-year head coach Mariana Cobra said. "Our team let those nerves get to them in doubles and that cost us the point. I thought we did a great job of bouncing back in singles. We have a great group of young women and I am looking forward to growing everyday with them."
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES – The Bulldogs fell short in doubles play with Southern Utah taking the first point of the match, but Fresno State's Ella Husrefovic and Alessia Dario battled at No. 3 doubles and earned a hard-fought 6-5 win, however Southern Utah countered with a win from Jessica Stefan and Chloe Purkiss at No. 1 slot to end the match.
SINGLES
Not giving up hope, Fresno State rallied and swept Southern Utah in singles play (6-0). Deniza Marcinkevica (6-4, 6-4) and Shir Azran (6-2, 6-2) set the tone for the Bulldogs as they dominated their opponents in straight sets.
And after Georgia Lawson found herself trailing 5-4 in the first set on court 3, Lawson responded with wins in the final two sets to clinch the overall match victory for the Bulldogs.
